Interesting rarity - thanks for posting!  Smiley

Are those barrel lugs really soldered-on?

That is what the sub-title reads, but the smaller more standard barrels have mono-block under lugs to the best of my knowledge, which I will have to admit is somewhat limited regarding the finer details of what Mass Arms Co. did or did not do in production processes.

The quality after-market barrels now available, as I am led to believe, are mono-block in terms of the under lugs being an integral part of the barrel tube.

I've seen a goodly number of Maynards with older Malcolm tube scopes mounted on them - both in person and in photographs from reliable sources. Makes me believe that it was a common accessory to add when they became readily available.

That is quite a hefty piece of barrel ordnance for a .40-40 Maynard.  Should have tamed any pesky recoil nicely!

I keep coming back to look at this thing!  Smiley

I'm thinking that this heavy barrel was always meant to be mounted on a percussion action. The barrel/breech gap is not clear, but appears (to me) to be the standard narrow thin-rim percussion-era width. Also, the barrel was not cut for and fitted with the "extractor" present on barrels for both Model '73s or '82s.

I've seen small compasses mounted in buttstocks before. It must've been a somewhat common thing for woodsmen to do - even into the 20th Century. It makes me believe that the butt section began life as a hunting rifle before becoming a bench rifle.

Yes, that's Leo's gun. I forget the caliber. It has a very slow twist, somewhere around 40" to 48" and I don't think he has found the secret to accuracy yet.
