C.C. Johnson marked Ballard
Jun 18th, 2013 at 2:10pm
Print Post
I recently acquired a Ballard 22 LR rifle stamped with  C.C. Johnson's name on the barrel, along with that of A Hubalek. In searching for information on both men, I read that Mr. Johnson's grandson might have the individual job records from when he worked on the rifle. If anyone can direct me to him via email or private message(?), please do. I would like to learn more about this rifle and its history since it did pass through both Hubalek's shop and that of C.C. Johnson.
Thanks for any help.
Jack

Irish, CC Johnsons grandson has the shop records from his shop and has offered here to document CC Johnson rifles. He does need the shop # from under the forend and also the serial #. It is here somewhere but I do not know how to search our archives. I am sure someone here will respond and either "Bump it up" or tell you how to find the post. I believe it is also posted in the Single Shot Rifle Journal. HTH good luck.

Thanks Fitz
I do have the shop or job number as well as the serial number. I am reluctant to put these out on a public forum. Knowing a portion of a rifles history sure adds to the collecting aspect of single shots. That said..... history might even help me shoot a little better (maybe). Thanks for your reply.

Does it have a relined barrel? That's the only way I could imagine both of those fine barrel maker's names would appear on it.

"Does it have a relined barrel? That's the only way I could imagine both of those fine barrel maker's names would appear on it". This is what came to my mind when I read the thread, possibly a Hubaleck re-lined by Mr Johnson or the other way around.
Curious, I have a CC Johnson barrelled Ballard, but Jerry Johnson could find no info on it in his grandfather's shop notes. If only these old guns could talk.....

Yes, the barrel sure appears to be relined. I am thinking that Hubalek first worked on this Ballard or that the barrel was taken off of another Hubalek rifle and fitted to this Ballard. The barrel is a No. 3  octagon Winchester barrel marked "Made to order by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., New Haven, Conn., U.S.A."
A. Hubalek is on the lower flat of the barrel, half covered by the forend. The number 45 is upside down and next to A. Hubalek's name. Stamping appears weak perhaps due to rebluing at a later date.
Mr. Johnson's stamping is for the early 1950's. So, Hubalek worked on it first, followed by Mr. Johnson in 1953, this being my guess at this point.
I agree............ if only these old guns could talk!

One slight bit of confusion. CC Johnson did not make barrels he installed barrels and liners most excellently. Eric Johnson was the barrel maker. If it was lined by CC it is probably a Diller liner.

It is a relined, "Made to order"  Winchester barrel.  Relining done by which of the two men.....? I do not know if it was made to order for a Winchester rifle and switched at some point to this Ballard?  I do believe it was switched, since the original .22 Lon...... markings disappear under or into the Ballard receiver.
The muzzle is  "dimpled" or concave.  It appears as if a "cheerios" cereal was impressed into the muzzle. The liner in nearly invisible at the muzzle but is evident at the breech.
Thank you for your input, every little bit helps.

Consider that the Winchester Made to order barrel came from Winchester as a drilled and reamed barrel. Then Hubalek rifled the barrel. Then he mounted it on his favorite action, the Ballard. At some later date the barrel either became damaged or shot out and was sent to CC Johnson for a reline.

My 2 cents. I'll make it even simpler:
Just maybe
Hubalek ordered a .22 Hi wall barrel in .22 long rifle.
shank is longer on a Ballard so it was turned to fit loseing some of the barrel markings. Owner shot a lot and was then (after losing gilt accuracy) sent to CC Johnson and lined.
My guess for what its worth   Don

It was at one time it might have gotten misplaced in one of the system upgrade/server shifts.

Jerry is listed as member  "j_c_johnson",  He has been most helpful to members.  I'd recommend addressing a PM to him. I know he helped me track down a real interesting history on a CCJohnson custom BSA Martini that he had relined and reworked the action on

Charley Johnson's grandson Jerry is a nice guy and inherited his grandfather's shop notes that were made on file cards.  They languished for years out in the shop simply wrapped with rubber bands, so some may have become damaged or lost.  They are now ensconced safely in a retired library card file and the last time I heard from him could be accessed fairly easily.  The simple answer is that you should contact him directly and see what old CC recorded that he did to it.  Wink

Thanks for all the responses. CCJ's grandson did indeed have the information that I was seeking.    Mr . Johnson was given a Winchester barrel to be fitted on the customers Ballard. That barrel, already with A. Hubalek's name on it, was relined with a Parker Hale liner that was supplied by the customer. It is nice to know some of the rifle's past.
