Joel,

I'm liking both the Maynard and the Krag!

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

Well the Krag really is accurate and I won't get to shoot the Maynard until I load up so ammo tomorrow, but it sure looks better than the Krag.

Agree the Krag's stock is not pretty.  Like so many of the converted small bore target rifles function was more important that looks.  CC Johnson Ballard I used to own was plain ugly. Sure would shoot.

You get used to stock shapes.  Critical eye the 1922 Springfield stocks are not hansom. They just look "Right" though.

Congratulations Joel --  Welcome to the Maynard side of life !  They are a thing to behold and your's is a beauty.

It appears to be a 1882, and my question is; Is it nickel plated or is that simply the light flash reflected back off of the receiver?

I hope you will let us know how she shoots once up get things "up and running" as they say.

Do give her a good home and make Doctor Maynard proud, won't you.  Thanks !

It has a faded case hardened receiver. Am I correct in assuming the same light cast bullet loads I use in Ballards and Stevens Model 44s are safe for Maynards? This one is a 38/55 (not a 38/50).

  Joel --

Many sporting style Maynard rifles were actually government surplus from Civil War contract productions and said guns were auctioned to the public.  Many arms dealers, particularly Bannerman's and Mass Arms Co. bought up the surplus Maynards.

The arms at that point were converted from percussion cap ignition to fixed primers in central fire brass cases, and the 1873 patent devices were installed, among other up-date and restocking to sporter configuration.

There are mixed opinions over the issue of whether or not the converted breech pieces are of sufficient strength to be loaded and used with smokeless powder loading.

Of course, I have my own opinion on the matter, since I also own and shoot a Maynard sporting rifle.  Although I decline to publish my opinion on the matter publicly, I will say that to error is human, and if I am to error, it is on the side of safety.

I understand. It still seems solid and tight. The bore looks like new, so I assume it has not been shot with black powder all this time. I just tried it with 6 grs of Trail Boss and a 250 gr bullet. I hit my hundred yard gong, but the hole in the windage adjustable Maynard tang sight is the smallest I've ever seen. It really takes a tremendous effort to use it with my old eyes. I think I will have to find a repro sight to use when I want to shoot it.

Joel

I don't see a disk on that tang sight. If it's threaded for a disk MVA will make a Hadley up to your thread, did for me anyway. No need to alter the original or switch the entire tang sight.

It just has a tiny hole, no threads. I spoke to Larry Romano today. I guess he is not a big fan of the rack and pinion sight for which I was going to look. He felt that the simple solution would be to drill a larger hole.
