Maynard "Dover" Model Question
Jun 10th, 2013 at 8:10am
Print Post

There is presently what is being described as a Maynard "Dover" Model carbine listed on Gun-Broker.  Does anyone know if this is a legitimate classification to use when describing a particular Maynard, and if so, what are the distinguishing features found on such a piece?

Thanks in advance.

I ask that question to the lister; said he was selling for a friend and gave me his email, so I have an inquiry now to the owner. Never heard of a "Dover" model myself but one can never tell. We may all learn something.

Looks like a standard 1873 Maynard to me; though it is a pretty hefty round to be found in the Maynard.

There is one distinguishing feature to be noted and that is the lack of the top octagon flats at the breech end of the barrel.  Mass Arms Co. did produce an entirely round barrel, but they called it the creedmoor model.

Could it be that the gentleman who is doing a favor for the true owner by listing the rifle, make the mistake of saying "Dover" instead of "Creedmoor"?  Certainly plausible, I would say.

Maynard's 1885 catalog list full round barrels in lengths of 26", 28", 30" and 32" and calibres of .40, .44, .45, .50 and .55.   Maynard list the No. 14 as the "Creedmoor" with 32" barrel in .44/100 with an option for .44/70

Thanks Will for a more fuller explanation of what Mass Arms Co. was providing to the market in the way of barrel configurations in 1885.

I have the 1890 M.A.Co. catalog and confirm that fully round barrels were available up until the end.

Keep up the good work.   Wink

Now, back to the question of what a "Dover" Maynard was or is ?

I have finally received a response to the Maynard "Dover" question.

My question to the owner.....

"I had some questions on your Maynard.

It looks like some repairs have been made to the upper receiver tang; maybe it was broken and welded; I still see what looks like a crack on the left side and the end portion of the tang looks to be heat blackened. Could you comment on that.

Question.....I am quiet familiar with Maynards for several years now and I never heard of a "Dover" model. What is that about?

Thanks so much...............Will"

and his response

"Hello Will,  Sorry its taken so long to get back to you on this Maynard. You are

correct about the repair on the tang, I should have had Dave mention that. As for

the Dover model, A Maynard guy in Reno said Dover was some kind of shooting club

back east, and said these are scarce. Beats me. Please let me know what you can

about this rifle Will ,Thank you, Cliff"

Hi Will --  Thanks for taking the time to pass that recent information along to the rest of us on the Maynard.

I am back East, as the gentleman said, and Dover could mean one of several possibilities.  If, as the gentleman said, it was a schuetzen club I fail to see, at least on the surface, why that fact would make the Maynard more valuable, monetarily, than say one that was shot at Walnut Hill?

The location of Dover, Delaware, immediately comes to mind, but it was not particularly know as a prominent schuetzen haven.  I will give that some further thought and report any thing significant.

I doubt the guy that originaly bought this Maynard had ever heard the word "schuetzen"or "Creedmore" or "Walnut Hill". This looks like a working gun to me, something on the order of the Sharps business rifle. It's obvious it hasn't had the TLC most fine target rifles have. I wouldn't call it abused but well used. Who knows, this Maynard may have killed buffalo; maybe Billy Dixon used it while the barrel cooled down on his Sharps "big 50". If only they could talk..............

There was a well known, if not famous, 19th century off hand marksman named G.H. Wentworth who lived in Dover, New Hampshire.  He was a member of the Cocheo Rifle Club  and competed with a Maynard rifle breech piece and many caliber barrels.

The name "Dover" Maynard means something to the current owner of the Maynard rifle up for auction on GunBroker and the one we have been discussing.  However, the act of attaching that particular name alone to the rifle does not a valuable rifle make.  The provenance is what may either add, or detract from, a rifles value in the marketplace.

As of this moment, there is not provenance shown, and for me, it is just a "plain Jane" Maynard; not wanting to be disrespectful to anyone, neither to the gun's owner, nor to Jane.

I can no longer find the so-called "Dover" Maynard on the Gun Broker web site.

Did it sell or was the title and description changed by deleting the word " Dover " ?
