Maynard 22 Rim Fire Barrel

As best as I can determine, the Hadley's Patent Device (H.P.D.) for using Rim-Fire cartridges in the Maynard Model 1873 breech piece, was offered as a factory installed option to customers who, either at the time of purchase of the rifle, or after the initial purchase if the customer/owner, were to return the breech piece to Mass. Arms Company.  Said another way, I do not believe that the H.P.D. was ever offered to the gunsmithing trade in order to accomplish a non-O.E.M. installation.  Non do I believe that an owner was able to purchase a H.P.D. directly from the factory for a so called "home" or "garage" project.

There are several reasons to support my conclusions, which I won't take the time now to explain.  My approach for achieving the same result as the use of the H.P.D., would be to use the Maynard breech piece as it was intended to be used, with the addition of a "rim fire" barrel.

The rim fire (R.F.) barrel would be identical to the central fire barrel, save and except for the center line axis of the R.F., which would be offset with a correspondingly off-set chamber.  Accordingly, the C.F. firing pin would strike the offset cartridge case on its rim and ignite the priming compound.

This is nothing new conceptually, but the particular application to the Maynard might be.  The off-set barrel axis is sometime used with .22 R.F. barrel inserts which allow a C.F. rifle to shoot a .22 R.F. cartridge.  Not match quality result regarding accuracy I don't believe.

By adopting my methodology, both the 1873 AND the 1882 breech pieces could be used to shoot R.F. ammunition simple by the installation with the special R.F. barrel I've described above.

Webb, you're about 130 years too late with your idea. That's exactly how the .22 barrels were done on Maynards in later production. It was done on both 1873's and 1882's. The barrel stub was bored off center about .050 toward the top and the new barrel screwed into it with the rear of the barrel going to the breech face. With the firing pin diameters in use then the strike was close enough to the edge to ignite the primer. I make my .22 barrels the same way.
The Hadley device was a factory installation and used a disc firing pin to strike the rim of the cartridge. Only the 1873 model was ever fitted with the Hadley device. The bore of the barrel was in the center of the breech. Guns with a Hadley device could be used as a regular centerfire gun simply by taking off the Hadley device. A dummy ring was supplied to install in place of the Hadley device to improve the appearance of the gun. Layman's book shows one of these and mistakenly calls it a centerfire Hadley device.
There was a centerfire Hadley device and it's purpose was to shoot centerfire cartridges in the rimfire barrel in those calibers where there were both versions available to use. The back end of barrels to use with the Hadley device was shortened to allow for the thickness of the Hadley device and they can only be used with a Hadley device.

Page 19 of the Layman book show a comparison of the center fire barrel breach and an offset rimfire breach, if you are interested.

I have been wanting to make a rimfire barrel for a while; still trying to figure out all the setups. Guess I'll need to pick John's brain on this one.

John, as they say in the country; "A day late and a dollar short"

Now I know what my next project is going to be.  My breech piece is a '73, so for it , you would have to bring the .22 barrel length back a little bit so the .22 R.F.case may be head spaced off the face of the standing breech.

I have never seen a .22 R.F. Maynard but I suspect they make into a very fine .22 off-hand 100 yard rifle.  I'm shooting a B.S.A. International right now but just can't get used to it.  A Maynard would be a fine replacement.

Thanks John, have a good evening

Webb

Did you know the man in Front Royal across the street from the Sheriff's Office who imported the B.S.A.'s?  He is no longer there, but his widow goes down from Fairfax to the old shop location by appointments.

Webb, I have two maynards with .22 rf barrels, and they both much fun to shoot. One was made by Mr Bly, and the other one made by Mr Pope. Will you be at Gretna this month? I regularly shoot the Pope Rf barrel in Charlie's match there. You are welcome to try them out. Later, moodyholler

Hello James -- I'm glad to hear from you and hope all is well with you.

I am planning to be at the Green Frog shoot at the end of the month and hope to have my 32-40, Model 1873, ready to shoot by then.

I would really like to see your J.D. Bly .22 R.F. barrel, since I have all but committed to myself to move on one sometime in July.

  Glad you are making progress.

Regards,

Webb

Mr Bly's work is superb. I also shoot a 32-35, 35-30, 20 g, 25-25 stevens, 40-40, and 64 cal shot. What else other than a contender can you have such a variety of calibers for? I have had a Maynard since 2001, before they were cool. My long-time single shot Mentor says HW's, and Borchardts are the only way to go and gives me Hades about my Maynards, but deep down, I think he is jealous!!! HJepburns, H/W's and Borchardts come and go, but I still have my multi- barrel sets! Later, moodyholler

Hi James,
I absolutely agree with you, and  although I am acquainted with Jonh Bly  for a short time, I am able to verify what you say by my having purchased a Maynard firing pin retaining screw from John, which he hand machined.  The workmanship in absolutely flawless.

You may not remember me, but Froggie introduced us when I was visiting at the Gretna match several years ago.  You had driven over from Roanoke for the day, and I don't remember if you joined us for supper at the Italian restaurant or not.  At the time, I recall you were driving a grey or silver pick-up truck and had on your hallmark blue denim over-alls.  I also thought, for some reason, that you were an F.F.L. Class 01 Dealer.
