QuarterBore, thanks very much for posting that ad.  That is very impressive.  A friend tells me that if I ever shoot a target that scores so well then I'll become very unhappy as it's unlikely to ever happen again Smiley Smiley

Indeed, a great ad from days of yore.

IIRC, Wayne's 1/4 bore 250 was with smokeless. Does not diminish the accomplishment, though I'll attempt to do the same with BP once my 1/4-bore rifle is complete.

Am also thinking of one of the new 1877 Sharps that Shiloh has just announced (2014 catalog). Seems to me that it would be a near perfect rifle for shooting a 250 with BP.

Can't imagine that I'll be unhappy should I ever break 100 birds in sporting clays, knock over 40 animals in silhouette or score a 250 in Scheutzen of any sort. The challenge to shoot another will remain.

I don't have my rule book handy but, I don't believe the "traditional buffalo match" held at Etna Green is for BP only. The only BP matches I can think of, are the Assra Long Range matches that were run by Ernie Stallman, they were BP only. maybe  ledball

BP in the larger bores not likely to be a negative. Smaller bore it becomes more difficult. Key to any is a wiped clean bore shot to shot.

I started this thread som time ago, and got sidetracked with a new silhouette rifle and some load tuning for my long range rifle.

This fall I'm spending a bunch of time with my schuetzen rifles to see how close I can get.  On the #52 CPA I've switched to the .32-40 barrel, and I've also been shooting a Ruger #1 with a RKS barrel and. Benchrest stock.

I think that the .32-40 actually does better with straight BP than some give it credit for.   My best efforts to date have been with the Ruger.  I have a long way to go yet, but have shot a 243 4x at 200m on the German ring target with it.

I think the load is capable of better, and that Boats is very correct about the bench technique.

I should add that I switched from the .38-55 to the .32-40 on the CPA because I think that the heavier recoil of the .38-55 magnifies any errors I make with my bench technique.

Still waiting on my 25-20WCF Low Wall, but have sent off the various pieces of my Hepburn for reboring, rifling, bluing and case-coloring. Have been quoted 3-4 months by all involved. Will then send everything to our own "buchsenmacher" (Steve Durren) to assemble and chamber in 38-40 Remington.

Chris - keep us posted on your BP results. Should be adding mine in the spring.

Hi Chris

I'm glad you got back to this thread. As you know I only shoot Black and I got out with the W. NY group this past weekend to shoot my first match. And it was just for sheer enjoyment because I'm not a contender in any way in that group. My CPA build is still a long way down the road so I took the Buffalo Classic in 45-70

I was shooting with an MVA mid range. 5lb trigger and huge recoil...definitely behind the eight ball. Load was 83gr 2F Goex behind a lee 459-500-3r (Leo at Boomers is way backed up with orders)

Controlling the recoil was the game of the day. I started out in the more classic tripod position on the bench and things were mediocre then I switched to a cradle position and started putting up some really nice score targets. Final target of the day was 4c and everything was cutting the 24 ring at 200yds.....I didnt score it as mrs and kids were putting the hustle on me to get moving.

What was a little interesting was the 200yd targets were better than than the 100yd... everyone on the line actually noticed.

The short story is I had a great time and that cheap little rifle surprised everyone. I'm really looking forward to owning the CPA. Which brings me to another question. I'd like to talk to you about how you handled the import/export requirements. Gail sent me a list of US FFL exporters that they have used recently. But I understand there is a couple places on this side that can handle requirements on both sides

How the rifle is handled is definitely a big factor that's for sure.  Recoil is a factor even in the tiny .32-40, especially because the small 25 ring is not very forgiving Smiley.

I've used two importer/exporters.  They both handle all of the details, you just fill out a form and send them money Smiley.   At first I used a company called Questar International but later switched to Prophet River Firearms.  They have a little better customer service, and are faster, and cheaper.

Chris.

Hmmm

Prophet river isnt usually synonomis with cheaper. I will have to give them a call. I had automatically excluded them based on a couple previous experiences. Like an extra $2K on a cooper 56
