i know this horse has been beaten before but...
what is the best twist for the .25 cal with a 120 grain bullet? I have a Shilen stainless barrel with a 1-10 twist in 25-20 WCF. Velocity was 1677 fps and it leaded up. Dropped down to 1430 fps and had terrible tipping.
Would a 1-12 twist be better????

GREENHILL
.257", 10" TWIST, .991" BULLET LENGTH AND ~120.6 GRAIN BULLET WT ARE MAXIMUM

.257", 12" TWIST, .826" BULLET LENGTH AND ~ 100.5 GRAIN WEIGHT ARE MAXIMUM

Your 10" twist should stabilize a 120 grain bullet at 1430 fps.
A slower, ex 12" twist makes the 120 grain less/un stable.
We also have Dell, Powley and Miller formulas available.

Dell formula twist = 8.8"
Powley formula twist 1.5 stability factor = 10.3"
Miller formula twist 1.5 gyrostability factor = 11.1"
All 1430 fps
10" should do it with your bullet, Charlie's formula is very conservative.

Dave,
Your twist and velocity are in right in the range that everyone is doing well with. Change your lube. I suggest Smilley. The fit in your throat may also be the problem.

Dave,

Did your barrel lead up at Modesto last weekend? None of our's (Central Sierra Schuetzen Club) did and the three of us use 10 twist Douglas barrels with the Mos 120 grain bullet.

My rifle had a MV of 1662 fps (over Barry's ballistic system) and Rich and Steve should have been very close to that.

Like frnkeore said, try Smiley Lube (aka Javelina Schuetzen Lube). Three of the top four shooters in the QB match used Javelina Schuetzen Lube. I've got plenty, let me know how much you want.  Cool

Am wondering if the OP has slugged his barrel to insure the bullet is a good match for the bore diameter?

As will also be shooting the 120gr Mos bullet in a 10" gain-twist barrel later this year, am wondering where to purchase the Javelina lube? Do you pan lube or run the bullet through a lubrisizer? What alloy are you casting to get to 1660fps with no leading? Thanks.

This is not the original Javelina Bullet Lube business founded by Jesse Smiley, the original Javelina Lube business was purchased by a member of this forum. The Previous owners Jesse Smiley and Chuck Cleave were dear friends of mine as well as is the current owner. For what is worth I believe this NY company is a label grabber.

JAVELINA Bullet Lube, both in the 50/50 Formula and in the Schuetzen which is 75/25 (Alox is the first percentage) is alive and well from;

    S & S Friearms Glendale, N.Y.

.

CPA sells it as well. A little cheaper than S&S I might add.

Interesting you say this because the Javelina Schuetzen lube I purchased from S&S was a much lighter color and didn't melt as fast as the ones I got from CPA.

Good that CPA sells Javeline. Will have them include when they return my action.

Are you pan-lubing?

Yes I been pan lubing for my .32-20CPA and 40-65 with a silicone cake pan. Works good for now. I'm in touch with Willis to have him build me one of his Pope style lube pumps.

Just make sure you use a double boiler so you do not burn the lube and ruin it.
