It's all original. It's not mine, I downloaded the picture some years ago on the internet. I think it was for sale on one of the big name auction sites. I've seen a few that were close to that condition. Most Maynard carbines were never issued during the war and were in storage for many years before being sold off. That's why there are some in this condition.

I think the case colors are interesting. They were after hardness not beauty. It is mostly grey with a little blue and it is obviously not faded a great deal. I'm a fan of the color hardened finish but I think some of the color hardening done today is a little gaudy.

Note the round breech piece vies-a-vie the more traditional and most often seen five sided octagon on top / round on the bottom configuration.

I'm with you on the gaudiness of some of the work turned out today.  My taste is towards hardening the part first, and let the subdued colors fall where they may.  There is one well know firearms restorer located in New York, and who's name shall not be mentioned, and who's work is in big demand, who puts out an extreme array of of bright reds, yellows, and greens in his case hardening process which misses the mark in my opinion because nothing like that ever came out of the Colt or Winchester factories.

John, please check you P.M. in-box, since I have requested two additional Maynard parts if you have them.  Thanks !
