I believe that Dupont Sporting Rifle #80 was replaced by SR 4759, but they are not the same powder.

What Bob says is true. They are very different powders but the burn rate is simular. All the #80 powder is at least 85 years old and that may change the burn rate some. If your wanting to use so, I'd start 20% under and work up.

Many years ago I wrote Ken Waters of Hand loader Magazine asking the same question.  At the time He would answer questions for a nominal fee, think it was a dollar. Pre Internet you had to type out a letter to the expert & wait for the answer. Now it's instant and everybody is an expert.  Good thing about this forum is there are quite a few who do know what they are talking about.

Anyway his answer was while SR # 80 and 4759 were not the same powder they were formulated to do the same job at the same burn rates.  His advice is to use # 80 data with 4759 dropping the charge some then working back up.

Over the years have found 4759 to duplicate SR # 80 published velocity grain for grain.  I think SR # 75 duplicates 4227 but not sure about that one.

I think I've read that SR4759 came out in the late 1930's, is that correct.    ledball

Leadball I don't know but my 1928 Reproduction Matten manual and 1937 first edition Sharps Complete Guide only refer to SR # 80 no mention of 4759

When 4759 came out, it was a Gift from Heaven.  It was designed to be usable at somewhat reduced up to medium strength loads and had the advantage of being very forgiving as to position.  I wish I had a nickel for every round of 32-40 I've fired with it... I could afford a bunch of primers and shoot up some more of what I've accumulated over the years.  Cheesy

I too read the old guys of the '50s saying that it was the replacement for SR80, and when developing my "standard" loads for 32-40 about twenty years or so ago used old recommendations from those old guys with SR80 to help recreate classic loads using the "newer" 4759.  They threatened to discontinue it sometime back in the '90s, but there was such an outcry they kept it rolling out.  Apparently the SR80-IMR 4759 niche for powder is a strong one! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!  Wink

Last night found a good reference in NRA'S  Hand loading" on 4759.  It's in an article called "Reduced Loads" by Wm C Davis Jr. No relation to me.

He says 4759 came out in 1941 and " is DuPont's replacement for  SR # 80:  Production was discontinued during WW II.

Davis goes on to say DuPont had a lot of trouble marketing after the war.  Only sold in 4 lb cans, dealers would not stock it. They later put it up in the 1 lb size cans. I can recall the one pound size had 8 oz because it was to bulky to hold a pound. And the gun shops would price as if it contained a full pound.

First full pound I saw was the Hodgen Plastic Jug, my powder cost dropped by half. Now it's double the price per jug and back up to what we used to pay. 12.95 for 8 oz. One pound jug cost about 26 dollars

Amazing such a useful powder for our single shots had all that trouble getting to market.

Many years ago, I bought a large quantity of surplus military .30-06 "frangible ball" ammunition with 1944 & 1945 headstamps.  That was the load with the "bakelite" bullet, about 108 grains, IIRC.  MV was about 1350.  It was surprisingly accurate at 100 yards.

Anyhow, it was supposed to have been loaded with SR-4759.  But when fired, it left a small amount of sawdust in the barrel. Does anyone know what the powder was?  Whatever it was, it would appear to be suitable for our game.

Glad I have an unopened 12# keg of DuPont 4759
carefully stored dry and cool
It works well for a "kicker" for duplexing with black
