33 max test results

I've had my rifle out three times so far. A sight in at 100 and 200 yards using 4227 with my 250 gr spitzer.

Results,
After adjusting the the POI for 100, I shot a 1 1/8" 5 shot group. 4 in 3/4, 3 in 1/4 with 12.5 gr IMR4227. Velocity 1280 fps ES was 62 fps. This was the first 8 shots through the barrel.

Moved to 200, after about 8 more shots, I had a 200 yard zero and shot a 243 5c.

I switched to 15 year old AA #9 and and re-zeroed. Range closed.

Last Saturday we had our club match and I started with the #9 load of 11.5 gr, still I could only get a couple of shots together Sad So, I switched to 12.5 gr 296 (vel 1380), it seemed to put more shots together so, I shot the 5 shot group with it. It was 2.256". I turn to the score target and after 8 shots, I had one center and quit. VERY disappointing!!!

I call a friend before the match and asked if I could barrow his Ron Long mold and went home with it, in hand. Yesterday I cast up 60 of them to give the rifle one more chance and went out again today.

I started at 200 yds with the 296 and the best I could do was 4 shots in 3", using both 1/16" LDPE and the black pipe insulation wads. It would throw one or two out of five 3 to 8" out of the group, no matter what. So, I switched back to #9 and started w/o wads, same results. It was only then that I found that my front mount was very loose. It must have been loose from the start as, I didn't dismount it from the start of testing. Pictured are the next 10 shots after tightening it.

Velocity for the 11.5 gr charge of "old" #9 was 1430 fps.

Note that the high and low shots are tipped.

It shows promice Smiley

Frank. This is the Borchardt with the barrel lug right. Are you shooting using  the forearm or barrel  on sandbag. Looking good. Pete

those tipped bullets:
What is the twist of your barrel?
Maybe you are border of stability at your velocity
Try a shorter bullet.

Here is more info on this barrel. It is a "gun show" brand barrel, marked only .338, 10 twist. It is a 10 twist but, the groove actually measures .337 and is slightly smaller at the muzzle. So, the twist rate isn't the tipping problem.

The Ron Long bullet is only 1.21 long. The full spitzer is 1.32 long, well with in the stabilization factor. The previous picture using the RL bullet used Fed 205M small rifle match primers, 11.5 gr #9 and visually inspected, unweighted bullets, not shot in the order cast. The RL bullet mold was borrowed and it cast .003 out of round on the base band. The full spitzer is no more than .0005 out of round, it is a two cavity mold. I visually inspected those bullet but, didn't segregate them as to cavities or weight them.

This time out, I used Fed GM200M match pistol primers and 12.0 gr #9 as opposed to 11.5 gr on the first target. Hoping to speed them up and help any tipping.

It scored 245, not bad for that big flier. 9 are in 1.92 and with the flier, it's still 3.062. All but one (at 1 o'clock) of the bullets outside the 25 show some tipping.

The full spitzer is starting to show some promice, .774 verticle spread, 9 shots in 1.990 and the tenth took it to 3.090.

I only have about 1/2 lb of the old #9 left but, a friend has about 2 more pounds of it that I will try to get from him.

I've only have about 60 Rem 7 1/2's so, I'll save them for the last of my primer testing but, I'm going back to the F205M's for the next testing.

My version of it is using the 223 taper and a straight neck of .360 off the 23 deg shoulder.

For the form die I drill a 21/64 hole, then lap it to .330 for the pilot on my 223 reamer. Ream to Max head size and then run a #T drill for the .358 neck size.

I size in a arbor press but you can do the same thing in a piece of 7/8x14 stock.

Wayne,
Here is a picture of the actual case,

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

It still looks like the standard Max case as, there is only about .015 difference between the case head and the neck.

Here is another update on my 33 ELCO Max. First the twist is 13 instead of the 10 that was stamped on the breech end of the barrel.

I received my custom mold a while back and I haven't had much luck with it. It came in .001 undersize from the base band to the nose. The best 10 shot score with it has been a 239 4X, at the June match, I did a 5 shot group of 1.512. July was a 243 3X with a 2.167 group. Last month, I did a 238 2X with one at 6 o'clock in the 21 ring. My 5 shot group started to show promise. I had 3 shots in about 1/2" but, two fliers opened it up to 2.035.

All of the above scores and groups with Ram Shot Enforcer, that I believe is the same as AA4100. June and July's shooting was done with 13.0 gr and last month (Aug) I  raised it to 14.0 giving around 1500 fps to stop it from tipping. Disapointing!!!

Yesterday, I went out with my new to me, rebuilt, Unknown cylindrical mold and my old can of #9. It seems to be on par now with the borrowed Ron Long bullet. The mold was .006 out of round when I received it. It is now better that .0002 out of round. If anyones interested about how I got it back round, I post about it.

One thing that I seem to be having trouble with is low fliers of one or two  per 10 shots with all but the NOE spitzer bullet. The NOE casts .340 and I have to size all but the last band to be able to BS it.

Does anyone have any Ideas regarding the low fliers that I'm getting?

Frank

Judging by the slight tip and the vertical you are getting close. You need to add powder; I would guess .2 grains add a full tenth and then sneak up on the other tenth. You may have to go beyond that just keep adding until the vertical dispersion stops that’s your happy place.

“Does anyone have any Ideas regarding the low fliers that I'm getting?”

In response to your question:
While your groups with the odd flier could be due to a conditions change, they actually remind me of my load testing targets when I shoot off the forestock. I can always feel the difference from the other shoots when the rifle recoils and in my case, they tend to go right of the group. With me it’s usually too much pressure on the wrist and trigger with my right hand. I try hard to be perfect but to absolutely no one’s surprise, I’m am not quite there yet  Wink
Not trying to besmirch your bench rest technique, just something to consider in evaluating your testing results.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Throated a barrel for a friend. Was having trouble breech seating and vertical stringing. Ballard 32/40 RKS gain twist barrel. Barrel on the light side. Rifle has a fat bench rest forestock very well done.  When testing the rifle this week, got four inches of vertical stringing.  Removed the forestock,  got nice round groups about 2  1/2 inches. Moved the the rifle back to rest the barrel six inches from the muzzle. Shot a round five shot group measuring 1 3/8.  Barrel shank on this rifle was poorly machined and is a very sloppy fit. Rigidity being at the face of the action and barrel shoulder.
