Peabody "Pacific"--anyone here get it??

RIAC auction over the weekend included another unique Peabody, one with underrib, thimbles, wedge-retained forend, pewter nose cap, and a wiping rod under the barrel (I'm calling it a "Pacific")  I bid absentee rather strongly, but lost out.  Just wondered if anyone here was the successful bidder?  I'd sure like to study some details on the gun.

Had hoped ya'd got that one John - so could come by sometime n' shoot it!  ha
RIAC will have the winning bid posted mid week sometime,
not sure if they will disclose the winning bidder.
I'm not all that fond of fancy wood, but that butt stock is stunning!!

According to the online catalog reference, this Peabody sold for $9775.00
I think it said that included the 15% buyer's premium

The forearm, thimble/wiping rod configuration looks like some of the Carlos Gove conversions that he did to Rolling Blocks. There are several shown in the Marcot Rolling Block book.

I'm pretty sure it's not any kind of conversion.  Butt plate is absolutely Providence Tool, as is the stock design and checkering pattern.  The variations in Peabody factory sporting rifles seem to be quite broad.  That's one reason I'd like to study it a bit closer.  I've seen three distinct variations on tang sight construction alone.  And that pewter fore-end tip is one of the nicest designs I've seen on ANY rifle.  Here's a pic from beneath.

A couple more detail pics.

Note the use of two different lines-per-inch  checkering on top of the wrist.

Going from pictures of other Peabody Sporting Rifles that I've come up with over the years, I've no doubts in wagering the checkering is factory pattern/style/configuration. Butt stock shape is the same as well (enclosing a picture of a Peabody Sporting Rifle I have/shoot, for a comparison).

Remember, back 'in the day' a customer could special order a rifle from most any of the manufacturer's, being made just how the customer wanted it.  Even Windychester Model 1894's and Model 70's were able to be custom ordered even past WWII.

Just my personal opinion here (and opinions are like noses, everybody's got one):  I see no reason to say this is not a Providence Rhode Island Tool Company Peabody Sporting Rifle.

So here folks set around the pickle barrel jawing away about this n' that.  Let's just enjoy n' savor this fine piece of old craftsmanship for what it is: a beautiful rifle from days long gone past...

Mr.Bear,
Either your photo is way big, or you just shot the butt section ??
I'd sure like to see the front half of your Peabody Sporter if you have time and don't mind.
Thanks

HAHAHA!  That's not the only half-Peabody that Bear has!!  Wink
But I assure you he has all of that one.  I'm sure he'll chime in with "the Rest of the Story", as Paul Harvey would have said. Roll Eyes

Best of regards graduated peep,
Picture was only of butt stock. Here's a few more:
Butt stock side swivel appears to be original/factory. though I don't have factory catalog copies with me, but believe recall seeing a butt stock side swivel in a factory catalog picture?

Chamber:  .45-50 Peabody.  I use Buffalo Arms re-formed .348 Win brass; 20.0 grs 5744 (loads suggested by Accurate lab tech); 315 gr cast bullet (had custom mold made/sized to .459). With rear barrel sight can achieve 3 shot 2 1/2" groups at 100 yards, which of course is 'minute-of-moose' n' will still make meat today! It may perform better with younger eyes and a solid bench for a rest?

Something most folks fail to remember:  people were of a smaller stature/build/size in the 1879's, compared to today. Were they to build the Sporting Rifle today, I believe they'd use a larger crescent butt plate. The crescent butt plate on this rifle is a bit too small for my shoulder (yes, put it where shoulder n' upper arm meet), so I take the liberty of using a slip-on rubber pad when firing at the range.  I know, I'm a just a big 'sissy britches'!  Here's a picture of friend firing this rifle (yes it has the slip-on pad - also helps protect the butt when hiking in the outdoors).

For another view of nearly a twin to this Sporting Rifle (Short Range Rifle is also a term that was used - anyone care to comment on the two names used, please chime in, k'), take a look at Hal's Peabody at:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

Of Note:  Hal's Peabody is in the 5,xxx S/N range and the number 6 on parts; whereas the one I have is S/N 62,xxx range and the number 30 on parts. Quite a spread between numbers. The factory may have just pulled actions/parts from their assembly line/stock on hand, to make and fill an order for a Sporting Rifle/Short Range Rifle? Lots of mystery n' unanswered questions about their Sporting Rifles, and not much factory documentation/references out there.  Adds to the intrigue I 'spose

A view of the butt stock side swivel.
To the best of my knowledge (oh groan) it is factory original.

Too funny John, ya got me . . .    Undecided
Here's what John's referring to when he mentions my 'half rifle'.

By all indications this was at one time a Connecticut State .45-70 rifle.  Now I'm not one to 'booger-up' an original collectable firearm . . . but I'm comfortable with re-working an older firearm that has already been messed with and lost it's collectable status.  Which is why I got this 'half rifle'.  It will receive a new barrel and most likely new wood front-n-back, and become an 'after market' Sporting Rifle.

PS: Too late to re-do, but I just re-figured out how to have all pictures into one reply...  Roll Eyes

Hmmm.   Shouldn't a Connecticut be lacking a sling swivel and have a Conn. plate with number in the buttstock swivel inlet?  Are there some other Conn. markings somewhere?

I sure would like to have that stock. I posted a while back about needing a complete military stock for a 50/70 I have. If you would like to part with it you have a standing offer. Also do you know of anyone who would do a sporting style stock? The Peabody to me has a kind of an awkward look to them but I still like the classic lines.
