My New Stevens 44

Picked up a new toy at the match yesterday.  I needed a .22 offhand rifle, my BSA MKII was just a bit on the heavy side.  It has a Douglas XX barrel and has a history of being very accurate.  No more excuses for me now!

Thanks Dave.  Never have been able to post a photo.  Keeps giving a security error.  Must be a Mac thing.

Hi Jack :

Nice J. Stevens rifle !  I've never met a J.Stevens that I didn't like.

However, some one who owned that rifle after it left Chicopee Falls didn't quite know what the two small 5-40 threaded holes in the upper tang were there for.  But you being the smart fella that you are can fix that to be right in no time at all.

Happy shooting,    Wink

I agree about the extra holes for the receiver sight.  Just need a base for my MVA and I am all set.  It is going to have my 12x Super Targetspot on it most of the time.

Spent some time at the range this evening.  I only shot 25 rds or so at 100 yds. through the Stevens at the end when the conditions were almost perfect.  1st shot was off to the right.  The next 5 grouped well.  It seems to like Federal Premium Gold Medal Match like my Martini.

Nice shooting, Jack.

I used to shoot that rifle after moving here from Colorado. My kids used the rifle too. Interesting with the removable tang and adjustable trigger. Bill Crane installed the barrel I believe.

This rifle appears to have a removable lower tang?  Was this ever an option from Stevens? If so can anyone tell me who does this kind of work and about how much the cost factor would be to convert one?

The removable lower tang only came on those 44's that were ordered with a single or double set trigger.

Its possible that this rifle is a 44 1/2 Stevens, the picture dosen't let us see the breechblock, it could be the 44 1/2 with the different extractor.   ledball

if you look real close i'm sure , its a 44-1/2,i would not buy a Stevens 44,they are junk in my opinion, unless  all you want is a .22rimfire.I have bought Stevens 44 and sold all of them as i do not like them.

I would have to disagree on the 44 being junk. True, they have definite limits and make good .22's but in cartridges like the .25-20 SS, .32-20, .25-20, .25-21, and .25-25 loaded appropriately for the action, they are just fine.
