Low Wall 25-20 WCF Barrel

John Taylor has the new barrel for my 25-20WCF Low Wall and am wondering if there is any advantage to a 30" barrel as opposed to 28" barrel?
Similar question with a Win #3 1/2 taper (which requires taking the ears down on the receiver, but not a big deal) as opposed to a Win #3 taper?
The rifle is being built for Schuetzen shooting, though I'll likely shoot some pistol-caliber silhouette with it from time-to-time.
Will shoot with both a scope and open sights.
Thanks.

The only true advantage is iron sight radius. If you are shooting black powder there might be a slight advantage in 30". If you plan to shoot smokeless there will be no advantage in the extra length.
If it were me i would think that a 28" #3 barrel would look proportionately better, but that's me. It's your eye you gotta please.

Another consideration on the barrel length is if you are going to shoot BP, the bullet may not carry enough lube in a 30" barrel. Smokeless of course it would not be an issue and not too many shoot BP in the 25-20. I have tried 3F Swiss in my 25-20 #2 roller with limited success for accuracy but had a good time experimenting. Steve Garbe gave some good hints on small bore BP loading but mentioned it could take some dedicated experimentation to get the desired results. As for the barrel weight, I built a Low Wall in 32-20 X 30 for a client in a Schuetzen design and the #3 weight barrel at 28" balanced well and looked correct.

Yes........ not sure I'll do much BP shooting as I would be in a class of 1 if I do. Have a 28" #3 on my .22LR Low Wall and, as mentioned, looks good and is well balanced. Unless I hear from others with good reasons not to, I'll stick with 28". Thanks.
