My old Lyman 55 doesn't like it, kind of jams it up. Anybody else have problems with this?

Is this the first time you've used a fine ball powder in your Lyman?

If there is any wear in the system, the "fines" can creep in and gum up the works.  The same is true if there is even the slightest trace of lubricant present.

I have 3 #55's.  Different vintages, different wear/clearances.  Each has a particular disliked powder form.

Ok, that explains it. The one I was using throws everything else great. I have never used any powder this fine before. I have two other #55's I'll try, one is pretty new so probably doesn't have as much wear.

  Rooster,

The solution to your problem is to substitute a Belding and Mull powder dispenser for the  Lyman #55 which, as you now know, has limitations with the fine granulation of the AA #9 powder.

By doing so, you will also achieve the benefit of measuring more accurate and consistent powder charges which will result in improved overall accuracy, i.e., target scores. (uniform velocity)

Noted. Love to have one and will some time in the future. To have one anytime soon I'll have to run a fundraiser to support the purchase. Wink

I have three Lyman 55s.

I have the same problems with the two older models which are either worn or were built with sloppy tolerances.

The newer (1990s model) has thrown hundreds of thousands of rounds with AA#9, H108 or WC820 with no problems.

I've dropped Accurate #9 with excellent results from both my Belding & Mull and Charlie Dell's Harrell.  Although I have a half dozen #5s and #55s, I'm not sure I've tried any of them with really fine ball powder like #9.

I'm getting excellent results with AA#9 in my Redding BR-30 and 3BR with the small metering chamber.

As was stated earlier in the thread, it's probably a function of how much "slop" there is in the slide or the rotor of a drum-type measure.  Those *@$%@ grains sure are tiny!!  It's kinda like measuring water. Wink
