Is anyone loading for 33-40 (aka 33-47)

Hello,
I became the owner of a Hepburn No.3 Match that started life as a 32WCF. It was period rebored to 33-40 and the bore is still pristine. I have had no luck finding anyone's refernce to loading this period wildcat with modern powders. I have concocted a load basing a lot of my information on launching a similar weight (210gr.) gas check bullet out of a 38-55. I haven't had a chance to get near the range to figure out if I am on track or playing with fire. Up front, I will not be using black powder at all. I will only be using smokeless since, when it comes to black powder, I have a better chance of finding an honest politician and can't stand the mess. I will hopefully get a chance to shoot it within the next month or so, but will look forward to any feedback I can get. Thanks in advance.

Black Powder Cartridge shooting is Not Nearly as Messy as you may think it is......Just MY Opinion...

hello mr crank       i dont have a 33-47 nor have i shot one. i do have friends who have and i will see what they are using. there is not that much difference between the 33-47 and a 32-40. some folks are using 300MP and magnum primers . send a question to j louis on this site and he can guide you. he has worked with this a lot and is probably one of the most experienced experimenters around. plus he will be glad to help you or anyone .

Very similar to the 32/40 B&M.

I use about fourteen grains IMR4227, breach seated, fixed or muzzle loaded with bullets ranging from 190 - 230 grains.

BP is stinky, expensive, messy, fun and surprisingly accurate..........sometimes.

14.7 grains of 300MP and Winchester Large Rifle Magnum Primers is a good place start. Then tweak the load up or down a few tenths until you have the least amount of vertical dispersion. You will also want to do the same with your breach seating depth. 200yd groups under 2 inches will then be the norm. It is one of the best, consistent and user friendly rounds out there and it is extremely competitive. I hope Jerry-H chimes in with his experience as well, he is hard to get by since he started shooting his 33-47 and is in the top three on a pretty regular basis using the same load data.

I appreciate the info. I Need to clarify what I meant, black powder is not a readily available propellant, nor is it particularly welcome by the fire marshall in my area. So it's not that I refuse to use black powder, I am only going to develop loadings for powder that I can get without any fuss (repeatability). I have launched quite a few pounds of lead, driven by Ye Olde Black over the years and am no stranger. My comment about the mess, was a secondary concern and fairly petty. I apologize for the confusion.
I have no experience with 300MP and I will look further, IMR4227 is an easy choice since I load all of my Self Loader calibers with that. I will look forward to any other words of wisdom that come up.

J Louis gave me the same load information when I was ready to start shooting my 33-47 and it's worked great for me.

The first outing with my 33-47 barrel on my CPA I started with the exact load that J Louis posted. The first five shots were sighters getting me on the target and centered on the 25 ring. The next ten shots scored a 248. Not bad for the first 15 shots out of a new barrel. Two targets later I had my first 250.

I would have to agree that my 33-47 is far more user friendly than my 32-40 (a great shooter also). A 33-47, 300MP, and WLRM primers is a hard combination to beat.

Interesting reading the one concept I had not considered, breech seating. The way the chamber is cut, I can load a bullet into a 32-40 case opened to .338 and it wil chamber without incident. I will see how it performs with a conventionally loaded cartridge and if it is less than stellar, I will consider making a breech seater. I will freely admit that a rifle of this type may lack the opportunity to shine as it would in the hands of a competitive shooter. I just love shooting odd-ball calibers, especially when they are in rifles that make people curious what the heck they are, so I may fail to extract the maximum performance that this rifle is capable of. I will come clean and let you all know that I pride myself on my collection of ecclectic firearms and modified examples that cause furrowed brows and comments that include, WTF is that!, to be very satisfying. I do have a weakness for .40 calibers, of which I own several varigated examples. I will keep listening and looking forward to any other input.

I was briefly working with a high wall barrel that started life as a #3 octagon in 32-40 then was rebored by Segrist (sp?) to 33-40 without opening up the chamber.  I used a 235 grain bullet and pusher to breech seat, then put about 14.5 grains or so of 4759 behind it.  The results were quite promising.  I heard through the grapevine that Westerner ended up with that barrel eventually... I hope he finds time to give it the shooting it deserves!

Yep, I have it. Interesting barrel. Is a very fast twist of ten inches. Have a hiwall to try it in, if it indexes.

Need to get off my duff and give it a spin. Yuk yuk.  Tongue
