Pope moulds actually were cherry cut. A bunch, if not most of those cherries that came out of Pope's shop after his death, remain in a private collection to this day. The moulds Pope made could not have been cut on a lathe as they were made on Ideal mould blanks which do not have removable blocks like we use today. The mould hinge and block are integral. Do a google search on Pope moulds and you can find photos of them.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Crash, that's what I thought after making that post.  I had seen pictures of some Pope molds in the past and began wondering how he did it.  He must have hand filed the cherries and then made the mold to match the rifle.  There is a picture in my old Lyman manual that shows the two blocks in a jigged vise that looks like it's being closed around the cherry.  Bob

Crash,
We have got you going, so will ask another question. It is my speculation that Mr. Pope used a square bit reamer to ream the barrels before rifling. Can this be verified or discounted? This would account for the variation is size and the tapered bore.

Your question is way beyond my pay grade. I've read the books on Pope, even owned one years ago and recently had the fortunate opportunity to work on a project that taught me a lot more but an expert I am definitely not.
Sorry about that
