Alternative powders for 32-40

On seeing how the powder situation is and I have enough of the MP 300 to last the rest of the year if I save it for the Big Matches on my schedule I am wondering if anyone has used the 4100 in the 32-40. I have a place where I can buy a couple of pounds and would like to use it for mainly offhand practice and save the good stuff for match shooting. I have used H110 and W296 in the past but don't have a lot of either one of those. Has anyone used 4100 in the 32-40? I do have some Unique and 2400 and some 4198 I sure that all of these could be used just never tried any.

Richard,

Started using 4100 last Summer at the prodding of J. Louis. Use a 203 gr. bullet cast 1-15 ahead of 14.2 grs. MV is 1556 fps, 3.9 SD, 11.1 ES. Shot my first 250 with this setup.

Hi,

If you can purchase a few pounds of 4100, do it.  AA 4100 is used by a number of shooters in .32-40 rifles at our local club.  The results are very good to outstanding.

Would 4100 be as safe as 4227 for an old 32-40?

With 4100  in 32-40 try a magnum primer. Earlier this week I went to the range whit my oldest CPA in 32-40. This gun has always been a reliable performer and I wanted to work up a load for 4100 for it. I got my load set and and started to shoot some groups. A friend was shooting with me he showed me some Russian large rifle magnum primers he picked up cheap. He said if I liked them he could get them for $30 a brick. I tried them and to my surprise they shrank my group significantly. The last ten shots I put on a score target for a 249 the out shot was an eyelash out. I'm switching to mag primers.

If I could not find 4227 or 4759 think I would be working up 32/40 loads with Unique. It has it's issues with powder position but that can be managed

All my Gallery 32/40 loads are Unique and they work just fine.  When Paul Shuttleworth published his Gallery article years ago he found Unique to be the best choice

Not 32-40, but close: Looking to use up some of my surplus powders, I tried Blue Dot in 8.15 x x46R. Best SD figure I have ever had and superb accuracy. I also tried Unique, but results were not impressive.

Paul Shuttleworth tried Blue Dot in his Gallery loads and I have used a lot of W231 gallery too.

I think the point is fast pistol powders can work with some careful loading to make sure it's in the same place every shot. And very careful attention to possible double charges. No wads or fillers just mount the rifle same way every shot

I have used Vihtavuori N110 with PB bullets in my CPA HVY bench rifle since 2004, if I shoot this rifle in the future I will continue to use N110, never fired a more accurate or cleaner burning powder in my  rifle.

In CBA matches I have fired over 100 rounds  and only wiped with a single dry patch on humid days, it costs more but in the amount's you use in Schuetzen matches the difference in $ is small. Only downside is they do not import the 8lb cans anymore, so when I find it try to buy a bunch of one pounder's of the same lot#.

Vihtavuori is THE powder for the 8.15X46R in Germany.  Most use a filler. Tissue paper being common.

I still have some Vihtavuori N133 left from my B/R 6PPC days. Is it a good powder for medium capacity rimmed cartridges such as 38-55 32-40 ? Is filler required?

In the 200gr bullet range AA9 works well, about 13-14gr range. I have enough of it, I won't need to worry about shortages for quiet a long while.

Coincidentally one of the regulars over on Cast Boolits was just touting a Blue Dot load for his .308.    Has the virtue of being bulky so less sensitive to powder position, and probably less sensitive to primer choice too.   Herco should not be ignored if things get tighter than they are now.
