indexing cast bullets

I know that the mold needs to be modified somehow to have a dimple on the cast bullet. What is the best way to do this? Where should the mark be placed on the mold and with what should it be made? A center punch, drill.....and how deep and what diameter? I don't want to mess up a good mold.

A spring loaded punch works good set on the light setting. You only want to be able to see it nothing more or you could add additional un-balance to the bullet. I mark mine about 2/3 down from the nose where it will get wiped out by bullet bump up. I am quite sure the local troll and resident expert will chime in multiple times with his argumentive opionion.

The swipe of the sprue plate makes a slight mark that makes a very nice index mark.  No need to ding up a mould.

KAF's method also works extremely well and is good advise.

About 90% of my molds have a index mark, , some I put on in my earlier days and some that were already marked when I bought them.

I do not like indexing them any more, it gives them a place of slight imbalance and the last ones I marked, I marked about 1/8" back of the nose. The closer to the center of mass, the less effect centrifical force will have on the imbalance.

I had tried in the past to use the sprue mark but with pan lubing, it can be very difficult ti find, especially during a match but, in combination with Mike's method it would work well.

My suggestion is to measure your bullets on the front and rear band and if they are within .0003 or less of being round, don't worry about it. If .001 or more out of round, use Mikes/KAF method and if you must, mark them, do it close to the nose.

John, what I ment was to use a combination of Mike and KAF's technics. BUT, I was for some reason confusing Mad Mike and Ken. You can usually see what direction the the plate breaks the sprue and use that to mark the bullet. It's another step but, I will try to use it on un-marked molds before lubing.

I use the same method that J. Louis does, only difference I make the mark as close to the nose as I can.

I use the sprue plate mark also. Used to do it like Louis.

Why would anybody in their right mind pay all that money for a good custom made mold and then mutilate it with a pin punch? If you want perfect bullets that fly right leave the mold alone. All you are doing is making an imperfection in your bullet that will do more harm that not indexing your bullets.
If you have a good round tight mold leave it alone. If you have a mould that is out of round or the edges have deteriorated send a couple of bullets cast in the mold to a good mold maker and tell him you need a bullet just like these only round.
If you need to index use Ken's or Keith's method but don't mutilate your mold.

I can't imagaine marking up top quality custom molds. Bullet, with a marker can't hurt anything.

Our Club offhand matches top 3 shooters. One carefully cast from a custom mold not indexed. One carefully cast from a custom mold indexed bullet and case. One buys store bought 38/55 bullets and loads on a progressive press.

Not a point between them most matches. Guess which one shoots the highest scores end of the year.

The one who is the best at reading the conditions Boats, that individual will always tend to be at the top of the list. The use of a sled and or indexing both case and bullet will never surpass those abilities.

John that's the right answer !  However it makes a tremendous difference if you have confidence in your outfit and indexing takes no time or trouble and can be a confidence builder.

I think it's real important to have a consistent routine covering all parts of firing a shot.  May well be looking at the cartridge case in exactly the right spot before raising the block is a "mental trigger" that lets the shooter move on to the next stage, watching for the right time to pull the trigger.

Prep stage is over ready for the action stage
