We took the wood off pushed a soft 45 cal ball in from the muzzle then clamped the barreled action vertical with a bushed up cleaning rod inserted and resting on the floor.

Made a little funnel and after heating the action fairly warm and cerrosafe nice and fluid poured it in with no difficulty.  After looked at the puddle on top and obvious it was going to hit the receiver mortise when driven out, so heated the top sprue just a bit and wiped it down to clear.

We were real carefull around the extractor held the lever so it was flush not raised which would allow cerrosafe to run under it.

Popped out just fine no mess  no fuss.  Also found the .405 Winchester Brass is going to work good. Rim dims are nearly right little too long and little to fat in the case mouth, nothing that can't be trimmed down.

Strider is after a set of dies from CH4D and a suitable bullet mold now.  It's a real nice Hepburn.

Very nice Hepburn Strider! I have a DST Hepburn in .40-70SS also, and had it relined by John Taylor back to the same caliber, but reamed to accept .405 Win brass.

Boats and Strider,

Glad to hear it sounds like it's going to be easy to put the old girl back on the line and soon. She's a beauty!

No need to take a rifle apart when using a soft lead ball.  A lead ball can be used to get throat dimensions too. No need to take the rifle apart.

Been off the computer for a few days.  Business and personal issues.

Thanks for all of the positive comments.  Last Tuesday, I went by Boats' home and he helped me make a casting of the bore and barrel.   We also forced a lead roundball through the bore.  Both have been sent to CH4D for them to recommend a die set.  Then I will be getting a mold and begin casting bullets.

And, yes, the barrel is original to the rifle.  All numbers match.  And the bore looks just about perfect.  I am really anxious to get the first few rounds made up and see how it shoots - probably better than me.

Nice. Did you happen to measure the barrel twist while you were doing the chamber cast, etc.? You will want to know that before ordering a bullet mould.
