45-70 Sharps with 500gn RNFP

Hello all, first post with number of questions.  I just received my NIB Pedersoli Sharps and along with that ordered some 500gn RNFP cast bullets.  Here>  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Anyway, I cannot find any smokeless load data for this particular bullet and was wondering if anyone is using a similar shaped bullet in their rifle using Springfield/Trapdoor load data -- < 18000 cup.  I can find data for the RN 500gn bullets but they seat about 315 thousandths shallower than the RNFPs.  When seated to the crimp grove the RNFP OAL is 2.520 and the RN is at 2.835 OAL.

I'd like to seat the bullets in the groove and that is why I'm asking if anyone would offer up their load data but I could just not seat to the groove and use the RN data as a last option.

Thanks in advance.

my 500 gr rn are bp for trapdoor, other ld is a duplex for sharps, but wouldn't be afraid to play with oal. Big concern here would be -big case, small charge of smokeless, could equal ringed chamber, good luck, be safe

You could try posting on the Cast Boolits forum.  I think those guys are into larger calibers than on this schuetzen forum, where a 38-55 is a big caliber.

Keep on hav'n fun!

Congrats on that new Sharps, you'll have a lot of fun with it. I would recommend you try some Swiss 1 1/2 with that 500 hundred grain bullet. You will find if your bullets are soft like 30 to 1 or 20 to you will have fine accuracy. I use a 500 grain Brooks bullet in my Sharps with 030  compression bullet just touching the rifling. Of course you must drop tube and blow tube.
If you get a chance you should go to a BPCR silhouette match some time. There are a lot of guys there that will be more than willing to help you. Good Shooting and welcome to the fold. Mike

Hello rb98ss

I use 22 grains of 4759 in my 45-70 Axtell Sharps and also in a 45-70 roller with 500-520 grain cast bullets with good accuracy and mild recoil. No filler has been needed and I use this load combination out to 500 meters for plinking. Good luck, and welcome to the group.

"Standard" 45/70 advice is use 400 or 500 gr bullets with a case full of black powder. It's what the government used for Carbine or full Rifle load and without a doubt the best solution.

Smokeless lighter bullets are best and 4759 is the standard powder. My most successful 45/70 smokeless load was a 350 gr cast .460 in 1/25 and 4759 around 22 grs.  You can use the heavy bullet with 4759 make sure the loads are light.  4759 runs best with modest pressure tends to spike when pushed too hard and heavy bullets will push it.

Like the other guys & with the exception of a thin card wad over black powder to protect the bullets base,  I don't use fillers.

put a cleaning rod in from muzzel against the bolt face and mark it with tape. This is distance from block to muzzel. shove bullet you are going to us in from breech into rifling and put rod back in to touch nose of bullet mark with tape. the difference between the two marks should be your oal. I use a small tap wrench  tightened on rod when it is against block and then measure from wrench to muzzel for oal with bullet I am going to use.
Dick Trenk told m.e the Pederosoli sharps will handle any load the #1 Ruger will Your shoulder will tell you when to stop.
2400 has given me my best groups with the straight cases and cast bullets. Start with trapdoor loads and work your way up.no fillers.

This is what I do for BP. It's the only way I can get my guns to shoot. Bullets loaded way out and no crimp.
