I am getting ready to find out, soon as my 40-65 CPA is ready.

If the 45/70 is any indication best with Black Powder almost as good with 4759. Exception is extremely light gallery loads with light bullets a fast pistol powders like Unique can do well.

Duplicate black powder ballistics with smokeless, 4759 is always the best choice for large capacity straight cases.

Twenty grains IMR 4227 no wad. Ron long tapered 20-1, 400 grain spitzer. Breech seated is capable of 250s. Fixed is not as accurate and about like my best fixed duplex loads.
The 40/65 W round is extremely accurate. Think of it as a scaled up 32/40.

The thread is about smokeless powder John Boy! Not black powder.

Pay attention!

Joe

I have converted several of my 4759 loads to 4227,  beacuse it measures so nice.  Will have to try it in the 40/65

Old rule was 4227 38/55 and smaller 4759 38/55 and larger.  Guess the rule can streach to the 40's too

Boats, never tried 4759 in the 40/65. I keep the stuff around in case I run out of 4227.

Dave,  ten shots measuring .410? Assuming that's at one hundred meters/yards?  That's another hundred bucks Joe Brennan owes you!   Shocked  Or should it be two hundred?    Huh

Yes it was 100 yards. Another rifle I custom loaded to assess the best sweet spot with tenth grain powder loads. Meachem makes pretty good rifles.

That's another hundred bucks Joe Brennan owes you!

Unfortunately the 3 ten shot groups were on different targets and I never fired five groups. Guess I did not meet Joe's rules.
Not sure how long it took me since I watched the wind real careful that day. Spent a whole afternoon shooting the 3 groups.
This is the best 40 or 45 caliber group size I have shot.
Key was using fire formed cases, inline seated with zero run out and .002 bell to center the case in the chamber in addition to finding the powder load that provided the minimal barrel vibrations.
Unfortunately the Lyman bullets start to scatter at 300 yards.

I shoot the .405Win.  I Like the 40-300 rcbs, have not worked up loads yet for the 350 and 400gr.

10gr of Unique with a 3/4" square of paper towel just under the bullet (to reduce volume and move powder somewhat down to the primer) yields a CLEAN burning load).

Are you shooting one of the Douglas 0.410" barrels? If so, I have a 370gr mould that throws a 0.410"+ bullet that might work for you. Getting my Douglas barreled CPA back this week and hoping that it will make a good 200yd bullet.

The Ruger #1 Tropical has a standard Ruger bbl on it (yes, .410 dia), I'll know this weekend what the High Wall has on it (I assume it's original, but it might not be).

At some time I would like to explore the accuracy potential of other bullets.

I don't have much experience with the .40-65, as I only have one gun in the caliber, but I have several in .40-60 Marlin, which is almost identical.
The load Joe specified is a great one that works well in most of my old 1881 Marlins in .40-60M.
