Realizing this was no ordinary rifle I proceeded to lighten the trigger and spend time getting the feel of this old piece of iron. It is a #15 1882 model Maynard, relined by an unknown maker with an unknown liner. Wgt of the bbl is about a #2 round Winchester. It is otherwise a standard straight grip model # 15 Maynard. I have won several matches with it and shot a .450 group with it a few years ago. However the group had 4 shots under .2 with one wide shot. The scope was a 20x Unertl 1/12”with very light crosshairs and a lee dot. I have shot numerous one hole groups with it at 50 yds and have bested top rated 22 bolt actions with it on occasion. This year at the March schuetzenfest of the Florida schuetzenverein, Jeff Ehrlich makes a yearly visit to get out of the cold of IL for a few days. He has our president, Bob Glenn take his shooting gear including his BSA to Florida, in his motorhome, to be ready when he comes down. Jeff originally got the BSA from an old member, John Sabonis , who often had gatherings of Joliet shooters at his garage, meeting and trading old stories on shooting.. When John died, Jeff bought the rifle and shot it from time to time, never really realizing it’s true potential either, until a few years ago, when he shot his first five shots at a 200 yard target into the same hole at Etna Green, with the aforementioned 22 King, Charlie Persons observing. He shot a score of 246. It is a Mark II with a light bbl. Standard looking all the way. He also used a 20x 11/2 Unertl. This year, early Saturday morning with hardly any wind, on my 80th birthday, I started shooting my Maynard and shot my first group match at 100 yds. The Palm Bay match conforms to ASSRA rules and targets, except the entries are limited to only two targets rather than unlimited. So you have only two chances to do well.
