Wringing out a new CPA

After many trials and tribulations I'm ready to start shooting my 38-55 CPA. It's stock style is silouette, but I'll mainly be shooting bench schuetzen with it.  So, I'm thinking of starting out finding a load with smokeless then move on to BP. Should I just go ahead and put my Unertl 8X on now or shoot iron sights while figuring all this out....I suspect I should put the scope on.
I really enjoy BP over smokeless , but  I suppose I'd best start with smokeless.

Well , that's my instinct, but I figured I better bounce this off some folks that know what they're doing.

Amen. Pick up my new CPA 40-65 Douglas barrel week after next (Gail & Paul are away next week). BP only. Really looking forward to getting it dialed in for silhouettes.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

If you're interested in accuracy................. use smokeless powder.

3rd or was it 4th agree.

My barrel is a 18 twist. 20 years ago that's what we used. Stabilizes that Hoch bullet fine.  Fixed I use 4227 17.5 grs and a 290 gr bullet.  Quantity loading 4227 is easier to throw.  It's almost as accurate as the breech 4759 load. Perhaps 1/2 moa off

Use it to establish your base line performance.  Then go to black were it will shoot just as good as long as you wipe the bore every shot. After make up your mind which way to go. I only shoot black if the match requires it. Black vs smokless see no difference in performance. Larger cases will generaly do better with Black powder.  38/55 it's a toss up.  32/40 black is a challenge to get shooting well.

Thanks for the info guys. I missed my good weather window yesterday that I planed to shoot in. Ended up buying a walnut log and having it sawed into gunstock planks. Ended up with 5 planks 8'X 22" X 2 3/4". All with crotch grain in one end. Dam are those things heavy..... Tongue
Plus I can't find my blasted Unertl scope! Shocked Losing my marbles over that. Never move as you'll never find anything again. Angry Now, off to look for that scope again......

Great load! I shot 15 rounds yesterday with iron sights on my rickety bench @ 100 yards. First five went in the dirt low, the second five grouped @ about 2 1/4" and after an aperature change the third five grouped 1 3/8". Very happy with that start.

A load that was very popular back in the 80's for 38/55 and placed well in the standing in thoughs years was,

18.5 4759, 2 1/2 Rem primers and a 290 - 300 gr bullet, most likely a Hoch.
