year of production on a high wall
Mar 10th, 2013 at 3:03pm
Print Post
I just purchased at a gun auction, a Winchester high wall, 38-55 with a #1 barrel.  The auction said it is an antique, no backgroung check needed.  The serial number range is 125xx.  Would anyone have an idea when it was produced?

Thanks,

Rich

Have never seen a Winchester rifle with two x's in the serial number. However, 12,500 was made in 1887.

Thanks guys.  Either year, it's a black power gun.  Depending on where it was shipped to, it would (will) make a great eastern deer rifle.  Probably too light for western hunting.

If it makes a good eastern deer rifle then it also makes a good western deer rifle. Deer are deer, east or west. Also a good antelope rifle.

Deer are deer.  That's for sure.  I hunt deer here in Idaho with a 38-55 Model 1894 Winchester.  It is no long range hunting cartridge, but it does just fine for me.

I mentioned the 38-55 as an eastern deer rifle only because of our thick woods and short range shots.  Actually, I'm a terrible deer hunter.  Never shot a deer but I tried.  I have lived in the east all my life and would love to hunt where you could see more then 50 yards ahead, like what I've seen in the western states.  I've visied many Rocky Mountain states and love the idea of glassing and stalking animals.

What range are your deer kills at?  By a ballistic calulator, the 38-55 would be sighted in for 200 yards if hitting 8" high at 50 yards and 11" high at 100 yards.

Last two deer I shot here in the east were at 70yd and 254yd, both by laser range-finder. Both across open fields in NC about 25 miles east of I-95.
