1885 Sharps with mounted RHO (I believe) scope

Just acquired a used one; seemed rather nice and probably unfired. Need info please! For the scope--elevation seems straightforward; are the 2 side screws on the front mount for windage or takedown/removal? In fact, how does one remove the (1) scope, (2) mounts?
Second issue--the buttstock has a rather severe drop at heel and a severely sharp (ouch) hooked buttplate. Just one outing so far and shoots well, but, again, ouch. I checked Treebone and CPA sites for replacement stocks but no joy.  I believe it has a thru-bolt. Any suggestions for restocking to say a pistol grip. Thanks

Who made the gun ?  1885 generally means Winchester if so CPA has wood, If Sharps might want to go back to whoever made the gun. So many Sharps set up's originals and reproductions it's difficult to say what the best solution is. Caliber vs weight and stock shape makes a big difference

Same with the scope could be anything

If you can post a good picture of the outfit and more details on the weight and cartridge easier to give advice

Sorry; my bad typo.  It is a C. Sharps 1875 (NOT 1885) Classic Sporter in 40-65, 28" bbl (about a #2 or 3 wt) with a straight grip crescent buttplate, wt about 9 1/2 # less scope; it balances perfectly for offhand.  The scope is a dark blued 32 1/2" long tube, 3/4"  diam; the last 2 inches of tube at the eyepiece are brass about a 4 power crosshair reticle. The scope mounts fit in the front and rear sight barrel dovetails, the rear mount has an extended "lever" toward the muzzle that is retained by knurled screw that is drilled and tapped into the barrel. I am fairly certain the mounts and scope itself are RHO, based on my limited research to date.

For the scope you want to look at Texasmac's excellent series of articles on BPCR scopes. He has some details on the RHO's

Crescent Rifle plates are not real user friendly in larger calibers. No doubt it hurts with that 40/65  Replacement best go to CSharps. I don't know what they can do about the straight lower tang but many straight grip stocked guns use add on pistol grips with good results.

9 plus is a light rifle for a 40/65  BPCS allows 12 lbs and most run right up to the limit. 12's most all have flat shotgun plates too.  Weight absorbs recoil so does a wide buttplate. May have some luck with Light bullets too.  Never really solved the recoil problem in my 45/70's even with light bullets. Ended up selling them all, Now 38/55 is the largest rifle caliber I shoot.

Drill a hole (maybe you all ready have one) in the stock under the buttplate and install a Graco 4" 14oz mercury recoil reducer. Adds almost a pound of weight and does a good job in taming that lashing recoil and crescent buttplate. If you are going to shoot in competition you will want a shotgun/silhouette buttplate. Crescent is only good for hunting or shooting a few rounds at a time. Ask me how I know.

emmett22405,

I don't have a photo of an RHO scope in the article that Boats referred to, but based on your description I'm betting you're correct in believing it's a RHO.

Sorry to come in late but I really doubt it is an RHO since it has a brass eyepiece.

You might already know that C. Sharps used 18" twist in the 40 cal. That will limit bullet weight/length to around 370gr for the longer distances. Heavier bullets should be OK out to 200 yds or so.

SS,

While writing the scope article mentioned earlier I spoke with Randy Oats, owner of RHO.  I can definitely confirm that the RHO scopes used eyepieces and dust caps made from brass.  For another article confirming the fact, click on the following link for an article by the very well-known Mike Venturino, then page down to the 3rd paragraph.
