Odd ball Win high wall?

I purchased (at auction) a bull pup design Winchester high wall.
It originally chambered for the .38-55. The barrel has been sleeved and is now chambered for the.22-3000 R-2.  The barrel length is 28 inches with an over all length of 34 inches. The rifle sports a brass 4x Litschert scope and a cherry stock.  Stamped on the barrel is the name J E Gibby.  Is this the work of a mad gunsmith or is it something else?
Included with the were two unopened boxes of G&H cases, Holly Wood Gun Shop dies plus another hundred cases.
I'll try to post some pics.  Sorry pics are too large to post.  I'll try to reduce them and send later.
Any info would be helpful.

I've heard that Jerry Gebby of Dayton, Ohio was one of the men, or possibly the man, who developed 22-250, but I don't know much else about him. Was there any information with the rifle?  Huh

Well, It's different, I'll grant you that. Not exactly my cup of coffee though. Bullpup rifle designs have never been been popular outside of the USA. Personally I don't like the thought of my cheek being right next to the chamber when the round is touched off. An  early example of a thumbhole stock. It's taken a lot of thought to put that rifle together.

That's one strange looking rifle. The gunsmith must have had a very unhappy childhood....

No info came with the rifle.  Have no idea how it came to NC or who owned it previously.  Price was right and I kinda like odd ball stuff.

Gebby was a well know Varmint rifle builder. If you want some references to books that mention him let me know. We have to remember Varmint rifles in the day were cutting edge high tech.

Also consider a working gunsmith has to pay the bills, probably would not refuse a job no matter how strange.  It's a great find very interesting, thanks for sharing it.

There is a fair amount in print about Jerry Gebby, including at least one photograph of the man.  The books by Charles S. Landis (.22 Caliber Varmint Rifles & Woodchucks and Woodchuck Rifles) and "Practical Dope on the .22" by Fred C. Ness are starting points.  Gebby is the person most often credited with the development of the .22-250.

That bullpup is from an era (1930s & 1940s) when it was OK to cruise country roads in your car with your rifle sticking out of the window while looking for varmints to shoot at.  The idea was that the rifle would be easier to handle in the crowded front seat of an automobile, perhaps while you had one hand on the steering wheel and almost half your attention on the road.  At that point, you would drive with the rifle loaded.

Certainly from a different era. No seat belt or shoulder strap to get in the way back then.

IIRC, that is frowned on in many locations today.

Only place you can shoot from your car today is the inner city. While talking on your free Obamaphone

Ballards may be weaker,

I've had a couple old singleshot varmint rifles with shrt bull barrels, but never a bullpup designed singleshot. Never cared much for the ones I had, as I like traditional singles. That bullpup is weird enough that I'd have to leave it just as it is.

Me, too.  Some oddities are intriguing in a shuddering, creepy sort of way.
