Where do I get a Highwall factory letter?

I just bought this gun on gunbroker.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

It is a takedown Highwall in 32 Special.   I was advised that it is pretty rare and that I should get it "lettered".  Where do I get such a letter?

Have you tried contacting the Winchester Museum in Cody Wyoming?

Thanks. It was made in 1915. Found that on another site.

I just looked at your location and see that you reside just a bit north of me. I'm near I-75 between Knoxville and Chattanooga. PM me please.

Very nice purchase on your part.  Have you received the rifle yet or is it still in transit to you?

I would be waiting for the big brown truck to drive in the lane with a long box to deliver.

What are your plans and objectives for the Winchester?

You say it's going under the Christmas tree for your wife!    Cheesy

I'm just a fool for Takedown guns and I have recently been buying highwalls, both original guns and actions for projects.  So this gun is a nice fit.  My friend told me that a book he has indicates  that fewer than 20 highwalls were made in 32 Special, not all of them takedowns, so this could be a rare gun.  I'll hunt a little with it and take care of it until it is passed along to the next caretaker.

There actually is no such museum as the "Winchester Museum". The Buffalo Bill Historical Center contains a firearms museum section (as well as a western art and American Indian section) and is a terrific museum. Was a member until I retired. Their annual $150 dues is a bit on the steep side for me these days. That'a 10# of powder;-) The BBHC has all the old records from both Winchester and Marlin and may have the info you seek. Not inexpensive and they do not have factory records on all Winchester rifles. But, there is a good chance they will on any High Wall other than muskets. Like the membership, not inexpensive.

Conact Bert Hartman on the Winchester Collectors forum.  He may be able to help you as he has many records on the highwalls as well as others.  He is an occasional poster here as well and has helped many people out.  Bob

That was a good call on the Winchester collector site.  I received some good information on the rifle from Bert H there:  It is one of five known takedown Highwalls in 32 Special.  That's pretty special.

Hello Allan,

You will not be able to letter your high-wall due to the fact that the serial number is too late (the factory warehouse ledger records end at serial number 109999). Your TD rifle was manufactured in May of 1911.

In the letterable serial number range, there were (25) high-wall rifles made in 32 W.S., and of that number (4) were Take Downs. Your rifle is the second 32 W.S. I have surveyed in the 110,000 - 140,000 serial number range, bringing the total to (27), and the 5th TD in 32 W.S. I would classify your rifle as being a rare configuration & caliber.

In looking through the pictures on Gunbroker, other than the extra hole in the upper tang, it appears to be factory original, and in decent condition.

Bert

Ballards may be weaker,

You're reading more into Bert's reply than there is. There are 5 listed in those made before records stopped. So it's one of five known to Bert, and not everyone contacts Bert with a highwall they own. How many were made after records stopped are unknown. Still a pretty rare gun, but quite possibly more than 5 made.

Possibly more, but possibly only five exist.  I'll take those odds.
