Another view of the tang sight.
The sight was on the rifle when I got it. When the tang sight was removed, the wood underneath showed it has been on there a lonnnng time.
Left side view of the butt stock.
Pictures I'm posting for now are from a file. Will take a few more next week, more detail of tang sight and butt plate.

I'm betting the sight came from the factory.  I bet Winchester and Providence bought them from the same source as Whitney.  Maybe even a Whitney product(??)

Any provision for a front swivel, or do you think the front of the sling was looped around the barrel?

Could well be an originla factory installation on the tang sight?  There is no provision for a front sling swivel/mount. No obvious wear marks on the barrel in front of the forearm where a sling loop would have been.
Butt plates from 2 other Peabody Sporting Rifles. Butt sling swivel and a barrel mounted front swivel on each.

OK.  As a long time Peabody aficionado, you've got my full attention!  Could you post pictures showing the rest of those other two guns?  They look really interesting!  I'll take a couple pics of my original sporter, which also has some unique features.
Seems like people that really appreciate Peabodys are rare, but unfortunately not as rare as the guns themselves...

I had these 2 Peabody Sporting Rifles for several years. This is the first time pictures of are being shared with the public.
They are my pride n' joy!
They are not factory original actions, they were made many years ago - only 2 were made.
The wood blanks, originated lonnng ago days with Pachmayr.
Checkering patterns are copied per factory original design.

The engraved model is in .45-70.

Not trying to hijack the post but thought I would ask who did the case on the 50/70? I also have one that needs another stock and some tlc. The stock that is on it now can be used but needs a butt plate but I can't find one. The stock on the 45/50 really looks neat with the crescent plate. Anyone know where I can find one? Thanks and happy Thanksgiving to all.

While we are on the subject of Peabody Rifles, I'm going to see if I can figure out how to post a picture.  If it works, here is a picture of a chopped "Spanish Model" I bought last summer .  I was just buying it for the action, but the bore turned out to be pretty good and I am working up loads for it.  Not very fancy, but a good "working" rifle.  If the picture doesn't work, someone tell me how to attach a picture please.

As we shall all do in time, the one who did the case coloring has passed on. No idea where to find a crescent butt plate, as on the 2 custom Peabody Sporting Rifles, only 2 were made, and that individual has retired from doing such work anymore.  If you had a stock to use as a pattern I'm sure one of the custom stock makers could duplicate for you.

George: the cut down rifle now has you a good 'working' carbine. I like the sling swivel on the forearm band. This iron just asks to be taken afield in the mountains n' used. Once figured out, posting pictures isn't too bad.

Yes; this is destined to be a working rifle.  Something that I don't have to worry about getting banged up in the woods, or busted up if my horse has a wreck.  I am working on  a good load for it.  Finally bought more brass as it takes a long time to find a load with only 5 cases.   I am seeing 2.5 inch groups at 60 yards with the 340 grain bullet.  That is sitting, not off the bench.  I have the RCBS mould for the 370 grain flat nose now.  Still have a few of the 340 grain slugs left to use up.  I like the swivels too, but one thing I've learned when packing large bore rifles in the  winter woods slung over the shoulder,  is to tape the muzzle or the bore will get a real snow job.

By the way, my Peabody 50-70 SRC also has swivels on it much the same as these.  When I get a chance I'll post some pictures of that.

That's what I figured the .50-70 carbine will be with me, a field user.  sounds like ya got a good handle on your cut-down .43. Personally, I prefer the smoothness of the Peabody's external action over the Sharps 1874's and other types.  hmm, since posting pictures of the 2 custom Sporting Rifles, seems like folks scooted away from here! Must be too new for their tastes?

Well for one, I'd enjoy seeing a picture of your .50-70 carbine, when ya find some time to post a picture, thank you.

I'll try and get a picture or two of the 50-70 in the next couple of days, just buzy with too many projects.   At the time I got the 50-70 carbine, I was working with a Conneticut Milita Peabody.  I watched that 50-70 on GunBroker for about 6 months.  Knew the guy who had it was just over the hill from Taos, New Mexico.  We were headed down there in September.  Just before we headed south, the listing dropped.  Anyway, whe had been in Taos for a few days and I was surfing a bit.  There it was.  I sent him a quick email and we met the next day halfway between.  That carbine just "fit" me when I put it to my shoulder.  Being a horse trader I was trying to get him down another $100 ($1500 asking) but he wouldn't budge.  I think the original listing had been around $2250 or so.  Anyway, it was my birthday, my wife was with me, and she said,  "If you won't buy it I'll buy it as a birthday present for you!"  Later she confessed that she didn't want to hear me bitching about passing it up on the 2 day drive home!!The only other rifle I have that "fits" me like that Peabody is my  Winchester 1895 SRC which I've had for 20 years.  This hack up Spanish Model is a close 3rd.

The Peabodys just "feel" comfortable.  I would love to have a nice "sporting rifle" but they are all well above my means.
