Looking for info ona vintage brass scope

Here are photos of a scope I purchased several years ago. I never found out what it is. Any ideas of who the manufacturer might be? Would this be appropriate for my 1871 Buffalo rifle? It is 18.25 inches long, brass, and the only markings are 8-X and the parrallax scale.  --TIA

RBruce,

Looks just like my Winchester 8-X. I am not a scope expert, but I understand 8-X is the only  marking on them. I seem to remember some may have Winchester stamped on the front mount, mine doesn't.

Any idea of the value? I want to have a scope option for my reproduction 1871 Buffalo rifle, but if this is valuable, I'd rather get a repro scope.  --TIA

Don't use that scope on a heavy recoiling rifle. They are made for 22rf use only and came on the Winchester Mod 75. They have nice optics and I like mine. I may put mine on a 25/20ss but, nothing of more power than that.

As for the value, they sell for $200 - 300 on Ebay, yours is well warn so, I would put a value of $200 - 240.

One more thing about your scope........... They take a different scope block than Lyman or Unertl. it looks like yours has been sqeezed down onto that type block. When you do that, you loose a lot of widgage adjustment as you can probably see. If the steel in the rear mount has been bent by that, it needs to be expanded back out to 1/2" between the clamping surfaces. The front blocks are wider than Unertl too and I think they will need the same treatment.

According to Campbell, those scopes were made for Winchester by the Carolyn Manufacturing Co.  The Winchester name was only on the box.

Carolyn was located at 50 E. 11th St. in New York City.  I have a Carolyn "Marksman" scope, which looks nothing like the Winchester offering, in the original box, without mounts.
