Colleagues: anyone have a contact number for Scott Hamilton of Mountain Specialties?

I purchase his front rest and micro-adjust top some time ago,  and it works very well. Very well made. See:

Problem is that awhile back a critter got into the shop and ate holes in the bags on the rest and I need some replacement. The leather bag that I now have on it does not grip some of my smaller diameter barrels very well.

I tried his e-mail, home and shop numbers, left recorded messages, and US mail. But have not been able to contact him.

You might want to post your question over on Bench Rest Central as well.

Most of the custom rest use Protektor Bags

Ray - Please let me know if you can locate him. I've been looking for a top of this type to replace the ones on my Caldwell & Sinclair bases.

My shooting Buddy in CA has this same rest {by the way they are excellent front rest's} and it does not use the standard type protektor front bags, they take their own style which is nothing like the standard front rest uses.

If the original is not completely tore up someone that works leather should be able to duplicate it for you Ray.

Colleagues: thanks for the ideas. Forty rod sent me a message about milling Delrin rods for the rest. ‘Gonna’ give that a try.

Mike303: BINGO! About the Protektor bag – tried the small front bag and it did not work. Whatever chewed the bags just left shreds and sand all over the rest.

Keep in mind so you don't run into a protest that sand is a requirement for the bags by several of the shooting organizations and it has to be able to be moved / deflected by hand manipulation. Here is a good discussion on the subject from one of those other organizations should your rest be used their registered matches.

I am relieved to see that this is not a frivilous post, because the Scott Hamilton I know blows a mean tenor sax. Grin

JLouis: good point, but I only compete against myself. I gave "competitive shooting matches" a long time ago.

Ray that is what competitive shooting is, shooting against one's self either in a match or just for fun. Now go have ton of fun trying to beat that fellow in the mirror, I hear is an awfully good shot.

I believe that Scott Hamilton stopped making the "Fudd" windage top some years ago; which is really too bad because they are very good pieces of equipment.

The Fudd uses three separate bags which are all made from Cordura nylon and held in place with hot glue.

Each ear has a very small, thin bag attached and the base has one longer, thin bag.  Each bag is a nylon tube that is sewn shut on one end and heat sealed on the other.
