Holy dunkel! No wonder they came to like beer. I can not begin to imagine the quality of "wine" that flowed from those taps in that palace at the end of the year as it neared the bottom and had been exposed to air and all it bears with it. Mold, bacteria, wild yeast--and whatever surprises the happy taxpaying vintners may have chosen to amend their offerings with. Don't tell me there was enough alcohol left to sterilize things. As was pointed out, it didn't start out of quality and purity. Leave an open bottle of wine on the counter for a year, then pour some and I dare you to drink it. Beer is liquid bread.

Beer, food, shooting--sounds like a good life.

We've enjoyed much fine beer and wine here.  I've seen but ONE cannon (in the Castle Museum here in Ljubljana) and ONE partial flintlock pistol in a local flea market.

Sounds like a nice trip, with all that fine beer and wine.

But it doesn't sound like a paradise for schuetzen...  Huh  Wink

Kermit,

I remember hearing a story about the "brew witches".

Back before anyone understood about yeast and bacteria, and when the monks were the beer brewers, if a batch went bad, they considered that it was caused by the evil influence of local women who were in consort with the devil. The local suspects were then rounded up and burned at the stake to prevent the next batch of brew from going bad.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

The only cannon I remember seeing in Germany. Castle at Landshut?? Most likely a signal cannon for more wine to fill the big barrel.

Great trip!  We saw another castle - the only  shootin' iron was a percussion muzzle loaging double barrel 20 ga.

But I do have a few pix (on the way to Ptuj) of fields of hops (for brewing beer).

Just want to mention, that we had a real great match weekend at Kufstein/Tyrol.

From the range one can see the Fortress of Kufstein, one of the most famous castles in central Europe. Its the town's landmark. Its located 100 yards above the town, directly at the Inn river. Built in 1205 from the Bavarians and belonged a long time to Bavaria, then Tyrol, again the Bavarians, Austria.. aaahhhm, I mentioned already some wars.
Wink

And at the match this year, we could win silver hatpins with the castle silhouette on it.

Thanks for all the recent postings and info they contain, Biggi.  I would have responded sooner, but I've been at the Fall Nationals of our North-South Skirmish Association.  We wear uniforms like the old Union and Confederate forces and compete shoulder to shoulder with original or reproduction versions of the weapons used in the American Civil War (1861-65.)  Most weapons are percussion type, with a very few repeaters from fairly late in the war using fixed cartridges.  Competitions are organized for individuals and teams and involve shooting paper targets as well as breakables.  Weapons range from cap-and-ball revolvers through carbines and muskets all the way up to mortars and cannon.  Lots of smoke and noise!  Of course a good time is had by all!

Regards,
Froggie

Just want to add a map, where you can see the how small is Germany, compared with the United States.

And now you can make your own thoughts about the history of Europe and the economic power of such a small country like Germany.

And maybe you think, this country must be overcrowded!    Shocked   Undecided

No, Germany has still 70% of its whole surface with forests, meadows, fallow land, lakes, mountains and so on.
Only 30% are housing, cities, roads and industrial areas.

I think those of you who ever travelled to Europe, they liked it to see all the old buildings and castles and history stuff and the evolved organically structure of nearly each region.
