You would enjoy the Butte 100 shot OH match in December. A hundred shots OH using BP at 200.  Any single shot rifle. We shoot from a heated shooting house built in 1908. 38/55 is the  predominant caliber. Last two years I used a 32/40.

That wold be fun! It is a ways from me here in Nh though!  I don't have a 38-55, too bad! I am always looking for an excuse to get another rifle!!

I have a Sharps Boreschardt that my father built back in the 70's in 30-40 Krag that I want to play with at some point too! That will take smokeless for sure. It was a new made action that was being made back then for a few years.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I also shoot smokeless in my Ballards, but I don't have any #2 or #3 Ballards changed to rifle case centerfire rounds. Mine are either forged frames in rifle calibers, or pistol calibers in their original chambering for the cast frame Ballards.
I'm not against smokeless at all, as long as it's the right powder/charge, and not a concave top #3f, with a centerfire rifle caliber barrel.
I'm sure you'll do whatever you like. It's your gun to load for.

Unsigned rifles and accoutrements have plagued collectors for as long as people have been collecting. For instance, the very fine Berg Ballard rebated #6 pictured in my avatar. Killer nice rifle, unsigned.  I have a very fine engraved Schoyen .22 rifle, unsigned.  Cry  The extremely well made coil spring breechblock is marked B Buckles 1957.  Never heard of B Buckles and neither has anyone else. So far that is.

Call it an early Malcolm and enjoy it.

Agreed! I collect Civil War items, I have a Sharps cartridge box that has a name but not 100% legible... I am 99% sure of what it says but not 100%...  100% would ID it to a NH regiment.  Crazy making!! But fun at the same time.
