DD, the trigger guard was kind of blured so you may have missed the Roe Deer engraved there which would hardly have been engraved by an American, I believe it to be totally English. Thanks for your interest.

Very nice looking rifle!

At 6.5 pounds it would be a wonderful weight for a hunting rifle.  You mention a 300 grain bullet, which one?  The Gould would be a good choice if it shot well from that rifle.

Strawhat, yes, the gould would be a good one, always liked that mould but for some reason that's one of the few molds that I don't have.  The one I shoot in this rifle is the RCBS
300 FPGC.  Shoots great in this rifle as well as other 45/70s that I have.

The sides look American style-pattern engraving to my eye. Some one who really knows engraving would be able to say for sure.

I would like to know to continue my learning process.

DD, your right, it could be American or it could be English made for an American or it could be English made for an English that liked American engraving. I have several friends that are engravers and they even argue over engraving patterns and then there are some whose work is so distinct that many know who did it without looking for a name. Whoever did it "I like it" and I'm not too conserned about where it was done but if I find out, I'll let you know.
