Most desirable Winchester High Wall Caliber/s?

Print Post
Opinions solicited on what are the most desirable Winchester High Wall Calibers. I'm interested in two categories 1. Most collectable or rarest and 2. best for competition shooting. Please exclude rim fire calibers and 50 calibers ( which are rare). Thanks in advance for your opinions,

Ya gotsta have a 32-40.  It was the caliber to have when the 'walls were at their zenith, and it aint bad now!  All the other calibers are just... other calibers!  Wink

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Best for competition in Schuetzen would usually be a .32-40 or .38-55, and for BPCR it would probably be one of the big .45's like .45-90 or .45-70
Rare is probably the British calibers destined for overseas shipment. John Campbell lists some pretty unique calibers like .40, .45, .50, and .577 Eley as going to the British.
For US calibers the .219 Zipper, plus the SL calibers of .351 and .401 are pretty hard to find.

Hello, everyone.  Just wondering if anyone has come across a .236 Lee-Navy..either the std. rimless or the rimmed version in a High Wall?

I did run across a .32 special at a MAAC gun show in Detroit many years ago.

#1 - Check John Campbell's 1885 book. He lists all known factory calibers.
#2 - Which competition? 32-40 is likely tops for Schuetzen and one of the 45 calibers (70/90/110) or 40 calibers (65/82) for silhouette and hunting.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

Best for match shooting in my opinion were the Laudensack designed international match rifles in
.30 Govt. 1906

Boats, I owned one. It was a tack driver with Military Match ammo. Hardest thing to shoot I have ever owned. You had to be a real "Hard Holder" with a tight sling to make it shoot. It was very unforgiving. A little error in the front windgage sight went a long way. I think in over five years I owned it I only had three targets I liked. Interesting thing was that when I lettered it at Cody it came back as having left the Factory as a 50 Cal Express with a #2 Barrel, it was returned and next left as a 30-06 fitted out as the Team Rifles were. What this indicates in my mind was that the custom shop at Winchester was cavalier in keeping parts together. They took this guy's close coupled straight grip tang and used it for one of the 1912 Team rifles.
There was no question it was a team rifle as everything about it was correct as the letter described. Another interesting note is that it was found in the Panama Canal area by a gun shop owner and brought home. Regards, FITZ. Smiley Smiley

Fitz and others,  I was in Jim Goergen's shop a couple of years ago and he had at least 2 of them.  Very unique with the cork palm rest.  The extractor was quite different as well.  I think he has had one of them for sale on GB for quite some time.  Bob

Campbell said they were hand made and to suit the shooter. About what you would expect setting up elite teams.  Obscure I know but always liked the post WW I free rifles. Real prize is the 03 Springfield International Match rifle.
