Don't know the answers to your questions, but someone has put a home made/modified cocking indicator into a Peabody Martini, and removed or broken the safety lever.  You might want to take your questions over to the British Militaria Forum, britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/directory.

i noticed the lever was different but is very well made(same looking age and wear) and not looking  like a home shop job.

The only martini with a safety like that is a Turkish martini.

The first version of the British Martini-Henry Mk I and all of the Peabody Martini rifles used that sliding safety.  Think that some of the Swiss rifles had it as well.

Here is an article about the British Mark 1 with a close up picture. No safety. As far as I know the American made peabody martini is the only one with this type of safety. Be interested to see something showing that the British martini had one.

Oh yes, the British Mk I had one - only it was 'modified away' afterwards, so that all-original Mk I's are pretty rare now.  In actual fact, the Turk Providence Peabody Martini was completely patterned after the Brit Mk I, except for calibre.   The Brits found the safety more of a liability than a help, so...

This is the exact same action that Peabody used to make the What Cheer models and Creedmore rifles.

I forgot the KIll Deer, if it were mine I would head that way and use the action as a donor for building a nice rifle up.

If I am not mistaken Peabody made the Turkish Martini's and the What Cheer, Kill Deer, and if I remember right the Rough Rider.

The Turk Rifles and the series of Long and Mid Range and also the Kill Deer were made by Providence Tool Co. in Providence Rohde Island. Very well made Rifles and were quite accurate. Have been working on them for about 4 years with a friend doing restoration to original configuration where possible. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Coming in here a little late, but will put my 2 cents in.

If your P/M is in 50-70, I would think it is a very rare bird; as most of the military production was in 11.43x55R Turkish.
Since it has the remains of a sliding trigger safety it would be a Type-1.
Type 2's were cheapened up by eliminating the safety, and I think made up the bulk of production which was reportedly some 600,000 units. Where are they all now ????
As someone already pointed out, these are the same actions used on Providence Tool's fine single target rifles of the late 70's, early 80's.
Somebody mentioned a "Rough Rider" model ?
I think it is "Rough and Ready".
Also as aside,it's been indicated that the barrels used on either Mass. or Conn. ( I forget which)marked .45-70 Peabodys used leftover Peabody/Martini barrels, as they have Henry style rifling.
You do what you want, but I'd hate see a hard to find gun in a rare caliber get taken apart when there's so many common M/H actions floating around.
I'd be looking for a M/H cocking indicator, which should fit, and find  someone's complete rifle to copy the safety parts from.
But that's me.
