I just bought this one. I am thinking that the lever was added after the fact at some point in time. I am not aware of any such option that was available, but then they would prety much sell you what you ordered back in the day. Factory or modification? As I recall there may have been discussion on a checkered forearm on the 417 also. It looks right but it could also have been switched out later or been checkered by someone after the fact. Opinions?

Did someone try to modify an earlier 44 series loop lever to somewhat fit the 417 grip curvature?

That would be my first guess. Seller claimed it was rare special order. I assumed it was not in my bidding. Will be able to tell more when I get my hands on it.

slumlord44, The 3 finger loop lever was a no cost option, the one on your rifle looks pretty beat up. There's a NOS lever on Gunbroker ($80.00), just type in stevens 44. You really should get some catalogs from Cornell.       ...MIKE... Wink

I have most of the catalogs. Do not remember seeing this as an option on the 417. It was an option on the 44 from what I recall. My memory tends to fail me more the older I get though. Was that a loop lever or the standard 417 lever? Seem to remember seeing a standard 417 lever a while back when I did not need one.

Mike, I took a look at my Stevens Catalogs and could not find any mention of an option on the lever, however I did look at an original Stevens Replacement Parts Catalog that I have and it shows a loop lever for the 417-417 1/2 as well as the standard lever, plus the standard 44 lever. From that I would have to think that it could have been ordered with any of the 3 levers shown.
Does anyone know if the checkered forearm was an option? I ran a search here  and there has been some discussion on the checkered forearm but no one seemed to know for sure if it was factory or done after the fact.

Ok, where are all of my Stevens collector friends out there? I know someone out there knows more about the 417 options than I do.

slumlord, When the 417 first came out, Stevens used the standard lever (lazy S),then, quickly replaced it with the tang lever, they also origanally had blued frames (but I don't want to confuse you anymore than you already are). If you P/M me your snailmail address, I'll send you a photocopy of an Ad describing the the optional loop lever.        Your Pal, MIKE

DeHaas also states, in More Single Shot Rifles and Actions, that at least the 417 1/2 could be had with the loop lever at no additional cost.

Nice find!!

He also indicates that three different levers were available for the 417 and that checkering could be had at extra cost.

Again, nice find!

Thanks for the input. Need to check the DeHass book again.Been a while since I looked at it. The deal gets better the more I learn about it. I thought it was a fair deal even if the lever and checkered forearm were not correct. Anxious to see how it looks when it arives. Hopefuly by the end of the week.

Re read the De Haas book again. Haven't looked at it since I bought my 417 1/2 a while back. Forgot how much good info in his books. That's why I bought them in the first place. Did not realize they also offered the 417 in .22 short. Now I have something else on my want list. Already have a 418 in .22 short so it needs a mate.

You kill me with you Stevens collection! I just want any of the 400 series! 414, 417, 418....any! I am about to "create" one of the 417s from a 1915. If I had stocks to duplicate it would be a fun project!

Please keep putting pics up! The Stevens were my first interest. My first gun was a little tip up pistol that belonged to my Great Grandfather. That was all it took to get the bug!
