What use would a Rughr No.1 45-70 be?

   Hi:

I have been offered this rifle for $450.00.  It is a Safe Queen that is supposed to be 98% original.

What use would this gun be for a target shooter?

Around here single shot rifles MUST have exposed hammers to be able to shoot the B.P. events.

The 45-70 No. 1 may kick too much to be "fun" to shoot as a target rifle.

Can the Ruger No.1 be used in any of the ASSRA events?

Any thought on this rifle?  I think that the price is good, but what would I do with it? Lol

                                                           Zeke

I have #1's in .458WM, .375 H&H and .405Win. and use them in scheutzen and other matches - iron sights.

45-70 is ok, but the throat is much more abrupt than in the 458WM.

$450 ain't a bad price!

Kick?  Adjust the size and velocity of the bullet.

Or fit it up with a new barrel and stock for Schuetzen.  Don't forget to get a Moulds, Ltd., speedlock hammer to shorten the lock time and amount of movement of the rifle when the hammer strikes the transfer bar/firing pin.

[What use would this gun be for a target shooter]

No use - Unless you pursue the proper target(s) for it ( a GREAT hunting rifle, BTW).   Cool

Truth be told.............. If I had a shot at that good a price, I'd buy it to make money on, to fund my next project.

It's worth almost 2X as much ( 1-1/2, actually), around my neck of the woods.

It would make for a great Schuetzen rifle and don't let anyone tell you other wise. Re-barrel it and chamber it in 32-40 and with a little effort on your behalf it will take you to the top of the list in ASSRA, ISSA and if so desired CBA competition and it will not take a back seat to anything found on the line. The price it is offered to you at will off set some of the costs to make the change. There was one that was put together by Wayne Schwartz that just went for 1282.00 on Gun Broker.

I have 3 Ruger #1's in .45-40 and one in .32-40.

To answer your question "what is a Ruger #1 'good' for?"

Simple answer:    FUN FUN FUN.

In 45-70 you can shoot 200 yd ASSRA targets and not worry too much about "conditions".   I did it with a 45-70 highwall for a couple years  just have to match the bullet to the twist.  We have a couple "buffalo matches" for 40+ bore calibre cartridges At least one that the Ruger would be legal in.  the other is the Traditional Buffalo match and the Ruger would not be legal there.  It'd be legal in any of the other centerfire matches, just not in the "traditional class".

And its a fine hunting rifle and the price is really good, grab it shoot it enjoy it and if you get tired of it sell or trade it and turn a profit.

As to that exposed hammer rule, unless I am gravely mistaken, that is only for the BP silhouette matches - For NRA target work OTOH, they are allowed - but you'd also need a new barrel, and sights, and...

I had a 26" Douglas barrel installed on my Ruger. It gave it a little more heft to control recoil, and it improved the balance. More accurate, too.
