That is an extremely nice looking rifle and it definitely deserves your pride of ownership and thank you for very much for taking the time to share it.

I see an old repair in the wrist.  Might want to epoxy that stock on.  Looks like the fore stock is a replacement.

Take it easy on the dog Tom.  Look real close, I bet you find an old stove bolt in the wrist of that stock.  Those old rabbit guns got abused a lot.  Most have a stove bolt somewhere.

Might want to take it to a gunsmith and have him check it out.  Those lever guns can look real nice on the outside.  Might have excessive head space or a bulged barrel.  You never know what you might get into with one of these repeating rifles. Lots of moving parts and stuff.

Kick my dog, come on.  I'm kicken your lever action.   Grin Grin

Beautiful and rare Tommy! Only about 10,000 1895's total built, and your special order deluxe with half octagon barrel, and B grade checkering is even more rare! Thanks for sharing the pics!

I like it too Tommy. I was just pulling your leg. I've always wanted that exact rifle myself.

You should post it on one of the lever gun forums so they can drool too.   Wink

Think Joe has it mixed up with my Marlin 1894 in 25-20 that has the stove-bolt through the wrist. Brown bore but shoots very well. Great rifles and yours is a particularly nice example. I also own an 1897 & 39 rimfire and an 1895 with 26" full octagon barrel in 38-56.

Tommy, if you will e-mail me the S/N I'll ask the Cody Museum (which has the Marlin production records, such as they are) if they can date your 1895. Of my my Marlins, they were only able to date the 1894 to 1905, but we can give it a shot.

If the serial number is above about 355,600 then it wont be in the Marlin records at Cody. No records after that number.

Sent in the request, so should know in a few days. Unfortunately, Marlin was not as good a record keeper as Winchester in those days.

As big and heavy as the 1895s are, that might still be a bit of hand-full in CLA silhouette shooting. Am going to try my 1895 in 38-56 with 245gr bullets this year.

150,xxx should date to 1897. Sometimes actual ship dates may be later than mfg. date, but special order guns usually ship as soon as they were complete, whereas others might ship later when ordered from the warehouse.

Per Cody Firearms Museum records, originally shipped on 9-4-1897. Repaired and returned 1-21-1898.
Rifle appears to be original.

Besides being a very special old Marlin, it is even more unique to have anything in the records about a return! Marlin records being so lacking of info, a repair record for the same gun is extremely rare!

I sure would for a gun of that quality, and considering you know the info now. I've done checks on all my old Marlins, and unfortunately some of the nicer ones don't have any info beyond just a serial number in the records. I'd love to have one with the info your gun records have!

The letter would definitely be a worthwhile addition to that very fine looking rifle. Original rifle in that condition is worth documenting. Of my five (5) Marlin lever guns only the the 1894 (made in 1905) has any info with the Cody folks.

Nice rifle, Steve. Good to see what some of the newer forum members are doing. Somewhat different cartridge, but ought to work well.

I designed the chamber reamer but had most of the rifle built for me.....just because somebody told me it couldn't be done.my next project will be a hepburn, ballard or borchardt in 20 ga slug if the action permits for the same reason.....using saboted .45-70 bullets!
