Card in case?

Print Post
I was watching the You-Tube video where John was placing a card in the case after loading powder and then pushing the card down a bit to hold the powder in the case for offhand shooting. Anyone ever had a problem with ringing the chamber with this method? I have observed the 32 Miller guys doing about the same but that case is much shorter. And read that Charlie Dell recommended not to seat a card on the powder but to leave it forward a bit to allow the powder to slump other wise you could easily ring a chamber.

This would be a big help for me shooting CBA matches where there is not much time 10 and 15 minute relays. I was thinking of having cases primed and charged with the card to hold the powder but am not wanting to take a chance on ringing a chamber.  I have played with a few case and found that I can push a paper card down about .475 down the case with a powder charge and shake it around quite vigorously and the card stays put. Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

Make a card wad pusher with a collar that will stop on the case mouth to still allow 1/8" to 3/16" space over the powder column.

That is exactly what I was planning on doing if the system gets the official OK.

I started to pre charge my case and use the stop collar wad setter, it sets the cork wad .200" over the powder.  Works for me. Very easy to turn on a lathe or have it done in a few minutes.

I use .095" cork I get from anywhere that carries it, normally in the home dept, or shelving area. Make sure it is pure cork and not contain other stuff, why I don't know but go with it because i been told that by experienced shooters.

Richard,

I have seen many guys do this. I have not. I am not sure you have a lathe or not, but I do and have been itching to fire it up. If you want me to turn you down some seating plugs of various depths let me know! We can talk about it at the range.

I'd think a adjustable wad setter could be made.
Drilled and tapped through the large dia, with a threaded shaft with fitted inside flange.

I used a cork wad on my 45-70 when I was shooting it at EG when I first got started.
Being cheap and on a real low budget anyway I simply used a fine threaded bolt with a nut set to rest on the case mouth. I Loc-Tited in place once I got the approximate depth set.
I started by seating 2 cork wads on top of the powder, set the nut for that depth, and then only used 1 wad, leaving the extra wads thickness as the gap between the powder and wad as per Charlie Dell. Charlie was still coming to EG back then and I checked my method with him.  On his advice, once I got the depth set I polished off some of the threads to keep them from catching on the case mouth.
One thing he warned me of was to avoid the automotive gasket type cork sheeting since it usually has some sort of tarry adhesive in it

If your only use for a wad is to keep powder in the case, try floral foam.  Cut a block of foam into 1/4" "slices" and push the case mouth into one of those slices.  The foam seals the mouth with no worries about ringing a chamber.

Beware of brown floral foam, it's made of fibreglass - or so I'm told.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Still undecided about this I went back and did some more measuring and found that I have a gap of .825 between the powder and the card. The card is actually a heavy copy paper that measures .005, when pushed down into the case to a dept of .475 it "sticks" real well and doesn't move when I take the case and shake it rather vigorously. My old system works I was just thinking that this could save me a little time during the match.
