Is anyone shooting a 44/77? I just picked up a #4 Ballard in that caliber and want to try shooting it.

Large rifle primer. Fill the case to just above the shoulder with 1 1/2 Swiss BP. Add .060 vegetable fiber wad. Seat bullet till it just touches the wad. Shoot.

Okay, now I that you have a starting load, how bout posting a picture ?  Please.

If it were me, I'd start with 45/70 load data and use a chronograph to see how close it comes.

In Nonte's book, Modern Handloading, he gives two loads. 22 and 23 gr 2400 with a 400 gr bullet. No velocity given.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Yes! I have a #1 Rolling Block Sporting rifle in .44-77 SBN, with SST and 34" heavy barrel. I love the cartridge, but haven't done a lot of load workup for the Roller. I can't even tell you what I ended up doing for load work, or bullet weight.
Have to go dig some ammo out and see what I did.

Well as soon as I get it in my paws I will take some nice pictures and post them. The barrel is supposedly nice will have to wait and see. I should have it in about 2 weeks as the person I got it from had to leave town on a business trip so now I wait. He said that it had not been shot in years, a closet queen. So when I do get it and since I plan on keeping this one I will tear it down and do a good inspection and detailed cleaning and a light oiling.
Can't wait.

Look up .43 spanish loads, the 44-77 is the same case except for bullet dia,.439 vs .446.The 43 spanish can be fired in the 44-77 and i fire-formed 44-77 cases that way long before such cases were available, this was back in 1970.Dave Clumberland, now known as OWS, lent me a remington rolling block in 44-77 to try out, he was trying to sell it to me.For some reason the did not like the rifle and didn't buy.I wish i had,oh the  things that slip thru your fingers(it was a CREEDMORE).
