A little advice is needed here...please

My load today was with Win.cases and CCI-200 primers...cases fire formed
62 grain of 1F Goex--drop tubed 30 inches
1 .022 card wad..No Compression
Lyman 525 gr round nose--same as the 457125 I think...Alloy 1 in 20...Case with bullet ran back into
seating die, just enough to put a little pressure on case to keep the bullet in...
At 200 yards 6 shots in oh.maybe 5 inch's....No idea of MV..question now..Should I leave everything alone and just try increaseing the powder charge a grain at a time until I get more compression? And see how the groups look then...Or what would you guys try?  I am gonna get the hang of this yet..From others I understan the 1F will work....John Undecided.....45-70 it is...I have a compression die I made from another die....not sure what to do.... Shocked

You don't tell us what cartridge but I'll guess 45/70. Goex generally likes some compression. Up to .30" is not considered too much in this case. You must use  a compression die. Do not try to compress the powder with the bullet. I would go to .200 compression and try that. Then go up and down 2 grains. That should tell you which direction to proceed. Then go in 1 grain increments to find the best accuracy. Others may have different procedures.

What sights do you have one the rifle.  With a vernier & globe foresight, should be doing better than 5" @ 200.  If stock sights, just raise the charge up to 68 or 70grs

I'd add powder in 2gr increments until the groups stop tightening up.  Then try different primer types. Sometimes a primer can make a substantial difference with BP.

Edit:  fouling control (blow tube or wiping technique ) can really make a big difference too. Consistency is key with respect to bore condition and all else.

Believe, it's your reloads - again the powder charge.  Also, what is the neck tension on the bullet in the case and for best accuracy - slip fingered, not crimped.

As for the Pedersoli rifles, all their barrels are match grade bored at the factory.  I have 2, a 45-70 and a 45-90.  Here's one of the Pedersoli targets I kept.  That's 14 out of 25 bullets in the ragged hole:

And here's what a Pedersoli will do at 1000 yds (10" center)

I think for a guy just geting started loading .45-70 with BP, 5" groups @ 200 is not bad at all.  It's not too hard to hit 2moa by playing with powder charges and primers. Getting beyond that is where the hard work really starts.  I shoot off hand BP matches once a month and to be honest I think that a fair number of the rifles/loads I see there have a hard time keeping under 5" @ 200m consistently when shot off of the bench.

Chris= Thanks for the vote of confidence...Maybe I am putting too much cheek presure on the stock as Boats mentioned...Gotta work on that...The crimp I put on is very slight..The bullet will still spin freely by hand..
I just need to get more range time in...I do not cast any more and all my bullets are from Chey and of 1 in20 alloy and ,458 diameter...I wonder if they aren't bumping up enough when fireing?
I slugged the barrel and got a measurement of .4585..Does this sound right?  John

With that groove size, I would shoot a bullet .459 min - .460 max

If at a later date, you would like to increase the accuracy of your rifle, have it throated to .459 free bore for the first .100 - .130 with a included lead of 1.5 deg or less.

If I had a .4585 I would want to be using .459.

I am a streaky shooter. I always say that. But my pedersoli was quite capable of 10's at 600 yds using the very same loading I told you in a different thread when you asked. the gun and that load out perform my abilities. I also won an over .40 bench match at a Schuetzen match with the same combo. ( admit there were only a handful of guys shooting that match but I still had to beat them.)
I was using swiss powder. 1.5f.  But I have never gone that thick on the over powder wad. .60 was the most I used. Keep at it. You seem close!! Cheesy

Dogman said, "I aint gonna tell ya it is a Pedersoli sharps rifle..If I do you will say it aint no good."

Don't sell that Pedersoli short. It's quite capable of remarkable accuracy. Mine is their John Bodine Rolling Block with the 30" barrel. 69 grains of Goex Express 3F, a .030 Walters Wad and a Lyman Postell sized .459" in stretched Starline brass sized to give .002" neck tension will keep 'em all real close together at 100 meters. My best five shot 100 meter group with that load is .823". I suggest making or having made a chamber cast. Pedersoli 45-70 chambers are longer than the SAMMI specs and have a freebore. Matching case length to chamber length will enhance its performance. At this point though looking for the optimal powder charge will likely be your most productive option. Increase the powder charge in two grain increments as recommended without changing any other components of the load. Good luck.
