Resting the rifle while load testing ? Need to kno

Good morning...Another thought came to mind last night....Just so you know,my rifle is a Pedersoli 45-70
with a 30 inch barrel...When you are load testing where is the best place to rest your rifle..I have been letting my rifle rest on one of those Bull Bags...I hope you know what I mean...Maybe this is not the method I should be using,as I see most shooting is off from cross sticks..
Yes ,I am shooting off a bench as well...The bench's here are short..Why they were made that way,I have no idea...So there is really no way to use much else, unless I wait until the ground dries and try off the sticks...As I know this is going to make a world of difference for the point of aim,etc..
But I just wanted to ask if you guys thought the bull bag would be good for testing of loads..To me it is alot more steady for this...If it is the wrong way,I would like to know befor burning up any more ammo..

Or I suppose I could make another bench, but hate to do this if not needed as someone would probably ruin it......Thanks for helping me out here...John

John Boy, Your suggestion to check out the other site with insight to resting the barrel was an interesting read. I like the idea about putting the talc powder on the top of the barrel and looking for the dead spot. plan to give it a try.

Sendro, just don't sneeze, shake or do it on a windy day.  WinkGrin  It does leave a neat effect.  Be sure to lay a heavy coating on the top land.  I've done it with several rifles and get a kick out of it each time.

Remember, different bullet weights and velocity will change the null point but not an abnormal amount

Dogman,
A suggestion on your bench problem is to take a piece of 3/4 plywood with you and 2 - 3 C-clamps. Clamp to to the existing bench to shoot then take it home with you when your done.

If you have much overhang off the front of the bench, and have your bag out on it,  you may need something stiffer than 3/4 ply, even if it the good 9 or 11 ply birch

I have a Protektor Model front rest with a longer than normal screw. He will make one up if you ask. Allows the rifle to ride high. Rest my match rifles barrels on it pushed tight against the forearm to give a uniform stop point

Hold the gun in my shoulder with elbows on the bench top sitting on a couple of  Protektor pillow bags. Only thing rested is the barrel, everything else is hand held.   Since you are sitting with elbows rested it's fairly secure and repeatable . Position is as close to x sticks prone as I can get it. Not considering X Sticks or sights from a palm rest, I would put the muzzle on the rest instead.

This method is not going to win any bench rest matches against modern single shots , Objective is to duplicate match conditions and sight's.

Groups shot this way are better than when I used a mechanical rest and rear bag. Modern rest are great for bench rifles, no way I can see to get a proper Traditional Schuetzen or BPCS rifle to shoot off a modern rest.

My experence is you need a modern bench style stocked rifle to work with the new stye precision rest. Curve to the bottom of offhand stocked rifles is a problem on recoil. It throws shots high as it rides the rear bag and and the round barrel lets the gun twist away from your cheek piece. Add a hook plate and it's no recipe for small groups.

Look at the old photos of Schuetzens when bench rested. They used the "muzzle and elbow" rest. Most of the guys at our club use a simple 2x6 lumber front rest to duplicate X sticks off the bench, simple inverted 'T" shape sort of like a bookend. I like the screw adjustment Protektor to compensate for more than one type of rifle.

What I tried this morning was resting the barrel on a rear bag.You know the rabbit eared bags that some place the rear of the butt on..This worked out good for me.No bag on the rear...Not to impressed with this load.Used a white background with a red bull...Really made a difference as far as seeing the target clearly. Need alot more load testing,lol...John

I Keep one of Protekors window rest bags in my shooting bag. If I need a quick rest it can be laid over about anything thats solid.  Club 2x6 rest are always laying aound, it can be thrown over one when rest is needed.

On rear bags, under the buttstock. They do OK for me with modern rifles that have a consistent angle from end of the pistol grip to the stocks toe.  Shots will move up however as the rifle slides back. Way to get around it is make each shot consistent in the way it's placed on the bag. Throw the same amount high every time.  True bench rifle is dead level bottom of the stock for just that reason.   I like the buttstock in my shoulder better.

Modern rifle with a little cheek piece are OK off a modern rest too, long as you keep your cheek off it when the rifle fires. Cheek pressure will throw off shots for sure. No different than a small bore prone rifle were it's possible to throw one way out of group resting your head too much on the cheek piece.

Boats,

Glad I read your post...The cheek on the stock is what was throwing me off this morning...I think anyway...It was one of those things I had forgotten all about,,,So now I am wondering if those test loads where good or it was me...So maybe I will just try that same load again to find out..Shooting 5 should tell me a lot...John..Thanks for the reminder..I found that to be very true when I was shooting the high power..

Hello, dogman..I too use a Bulls Bag...the heavy bench model..canvas & suede leather.  I made up wood blocks that bag sits on to adjust elevation..buttstock sits on Protector bunny bag...have to do a bit of experimenting & rubber pad shims to get everything lined up height wise.
I can use my heavy Hart rest for rifles up to .38-55
but for .40 and up..the Bullsbag works better for me.
Best of luck!
