Metal-patch A Passing Fad?

Hello, everyone.  I have been re-reading Dr. Manns correspondence with Pope.  There are a few passages where Mann is of the opinion that the metal-patched bullet is not the end-all answer for rifle shooting.
Even his first metal jacketed bullets are base-band type, designed to be breech-seated.   He seems to opine that in near future, a new type of bullet alloy will surface, that will withstand the torque & pressures of the new smokeless powders.
He still is thinking the answer will be with a cast bullet.  Interesting!

It was cost that finally killed the jacketed bullet.  I purchased my last box of jacketed bullets for hunting in 1978. High cost ( 10.00 per hundred ) was the straw that broke the camels back.

I purchased a percussion rifle and built a .35 Whelen to hunt Elk and deer with, with cast bullets that is. Never looked back. I still have boxes of jacketed bullets from the seventies.

"It was cost that finally killed the jacketed bullet"

I agree 100% 30 cents a shoot is just TO much. I still buy a box or two at gun shows for $10 - $15 to shoot in my 22 & 6mm's (it's hard to get a cast going 32 - 3600) but, I rarely shoot them.

I read about the long range hi power guys shooting 40 - 50 cent bullets and replacing a barrel after 800 - 1000 shots and just shiver.
