Is a die set needed if breech seating?
Feb 8th, 2012 at 12:00pm

Just ordered a 25-20SS from CPA, first single shot rifle.  Jamison brass from Buffalo Arms should arrive today.  If only breech seating is used do I really need a set of dies?  Expense is not an issue, I just can't see their use other than possibly initial sizing.  Maybe just a shell holder to fix/expand necks?
Insights would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need a decapper die.

Depending on the loads you're using, you will infrequently need a sizing die and a neck expanding/belling die.  (I use a Lyman M die.)  Eventually your brass will expand to the point where it will be difficult to chamber and  a trip through the sizer will be a good thing.  I size my brass for my 30-20 Ruger #3 about every fifth shot.  Lower pressure cartridges may go fifty shots or more before needing sizing.

Even with a universal decapping tool, and a Lyman M die, I still find the need for a complete die set, especially for new brass or really old brass. You wont regret owning a set, it will get used occasionally.

If the brass will chamber when you get it, you'll be able to get by w/o a die, at least until you have a problem cambering them. You will need some way of decapping though. A 310 decapper will work at the bench if you have one. Or you can make a simple hand one out of a piece of 1/4" steel rod and a block with a hole in it. For recapping, I've always used a Lee tool.

Whether or not you get dies, you'll need a simple tapered rod that will go into the mouth of the case to expand it back out to seal the neck if low pressure gasses get behind it and start to collapse it.

Been shooting my 25/20 SS for about ten years now. Never have owned a set of dies.  The rifle doesn't get shot all that much.  The first year a couple thousand or so and maybe a couple hundred a year since.

Wouldn't mind having a set of dies though. Might come in handy if I wanted to turn some shells myself. Wouldn't mind having a couple stainless steel cases. The little 25/20 SS cases are rather fragile.

You be well served to buy a re&de capper either the Schoyen design as made by CPA or the Meacham as sold by buffalo arms. I have been shooting this game for about fourteen years now and I don't own a set of dies and never had a need for a set to date. If you plan on using one case at the line I don't see the need. If you plan on prepping brass in order to have pre-charged cases on the line then they might be useful to uniform all of your cases during the prep process.

Order the Lee Loader decapper pin,  decap chamber and plastic box for the 22/250 from Lee Precision

Twelve Bucks
I use these parts for my 25-20, 220 Swift, 38-55,45-75, 43 Spanish and 45-70/90 at the range. Then you only need one 25-20SS case for breech seating.  Pope & Hudson shot that way! Grin

With my 45-120..I don't have regular dies. I used a buffalo Arms inside neck expander at the size of the cast boolets, and I use a buffalo Arms Compression Die inside of an M-2 Lyman Die. and Finger seat the bullets. I use a hand decapper on that one, and also on my 45-70...Both are 1874 Sharps..If I have trouble betting the fireformed brass to chamber, I will then purchase a full length sizing die!..
