	i have a lyman mould number 500294 and am wondering what it was made for. it is a hollow base bullet, but i think it is to big for the 50 cal muzzle loader. someone said it was for one of the old 50 caliber black powder cartridges of the late 18 hundreds. anyone know what it was made for. argie1891

	My 1958 Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists it and shows the bullet in profile. But it just says "made for the .50 caliber rifles". Not much help.

	that is what i found in my books. i really think it was made for some or the other cartridge rifle, but am not sure. a hollow base mould could be used in those rifles that have .512 dia. and should bump up without a problem. then again i might be completly wrong it might be a minnie ball for the 50 caliber muzzle loader. oh well i will keep looking and maybe find something. argie1891

	A 450 grain hollow based bullet, sound like it would work well in my 50-70. Have you cast with the mold? If so what diameter bullet does it drop?

	i cast a dozen bullets the weight is less than listed. i did not use pure lead but my pistol alloy that is ww with pb added. they weiged between 352 and 353 grains the bottom band measures .502 next one up .501 next one .499 and above crimping grove about .485. as soon as the weather gets a bit better i am going to force a few down my muzzle loader blr and see how it shoots. kinda big for a hollow base minnie but hell it might shoot well. joe

	yep i know that it says it is almost 100 gr. lighter than listed in books. the measurments more or less confirm that it is the correct number on the mould. the reason i am asking is i really dont have a clue what it is for or when made. joe

	The weight difference might be due to a non-standard hollow base plug. Also, the hard alloy will make a small change in both the diameter and weight. David
