Am having a 25-20 Low Wall refurb'd and am wondering what folks are finding to be the best bullet for Schuetzen competition with this round in a 1-in-10" twist 28" long barrel? Thanks.

SS, I am partial to the RCBS      82301-25-20-85
* Bhn15.4      Base-258      85gr

Example target with a H&R 28ga shotgun converted to 25-20 using a TJ's Enterprise liner with a mid range vernier & globe pin head fore sight.  From bench rest, the groups are tighter

SSShooter,

The David Mos 120 grain bullet is working very well in my 25-20 WCF with a 10 twist barrel and AA4100. Other shooters in my area are having the same success with this combination.

Hello, SSShooter.  You didn't say, but I assume you are going to breech-seat?  I have a .25-20SS in a Stevens Mod. 49.  The rifle came with a tapered 100gr. Barnett mould.  I tried breech-seating original Ideal straight-sided bullets..had to nose-first size in order to do this..I used both an Ideal push-type, as well as a plugged case for seating.
With the straight sided Ideals..every load combination I tried, the accuracy never came close to that of the tapered Barnett.

Second the bullet Jerry_H is talking about it's a winner in the 10 twist for 200yd score/group shooting.

I realize that JB's target is noted as being shot at 50yds offhand and I was wondering John Boy if you have taken that bullet out to 200yds off the bench and if so what kind of groups did you get?

To start with it will be fixed ammo until I've gotten used to the rifle and see what it will do and to keep things simple (like me?). Once I've got it working the way I think it should, I'll move on to breech-seating.

Fixed is a different animal. You need a cylindrical bullet and a bore riding nose will help. With your twist, you can shoot 120 gr bullets. The tapered BSed bullets won't work well fixed.

You only have two choices for new molds, either Johns RCBS 85 gr or there 120 gr GC. You'll only be able to shoot matches with the 120 by leaving the gc off.

Frank why the limitations on the moulds, are you referring to gas check only?

The only new cylindrical molds that I know of in 25 cal are are made by Lyman 257420, the 2 by RCBS and a 100 gr gc by SAECO.

I suppose a custom mold maker would do a cylindrical mold but, I'd wait on that until I worked things out and then began BSing.

There is this one where you can design your own for about $100.

Hello, SSShooter.  I have been working with a Ballard No. 3 in .25-25 Stevens, I have only used Swiss 3FG because of the cast action.  The 30" oct. brl. has 1-12" twist.  I know custom moulds are $$$!   I have had very good luck with an original Ideal #257016 @ 100grs. of 20-1 lead-tin alloy.  Am also working with Ideal 257020 @96grs.  These are seated in case with Ideal No. 3 tong tool.
Rifle is fitted with vernier tang & inter. appa. windage front.  So far at 50yds. grouping into 3/8" to 1/2".
Some of these old integeral handled moulds can surprise you for roundness and precision.

Jim Borton might have a cherrie for a cylindrical 25 cal. bullet and so might Mos. My 32-40 B&D breach seat bullet is cylindrical and it would be better served to have a bullet made with a custom fit to the rifle.

So all of the Mos moulds I've read about recently being back in production, etc., for 25cal bullets are strictly for breech seating? My new barrel will have be .257". Am wondering if I Mos doesn't have a proper mould design all ready in his portfolio.

David / Jim will make you what ever you want. Buying a mould from a custom mould maker is not like buying a mould off the shelf and just being stuck with whats available. The bullet will be custom made to fit your rifle as well as your personnel needs. I also don't think that a particular bullet can only be used for breach seating and not fixed. You will see tapered bullets being used in BPCR and cylindrical bullets being used for breach seating and that is exactly what I have been using for years with great success. I also have a tapered bullet that shoots just as well. I tend to think bullet design at times gets overly complicated and gets based on one individuals personnel preference. Talk to Jim and Dave and listen to what they to have to say as they are the true bullet specialists, it is their business and they truly do know what will work to best fit your overall needs.
