Bevel base cast bullets in SS rifle

I have some Oregon Trail Laser cast 240 grain 44 SWC bullets (bevel base). I have been shooting them in both my 44 Specials, and 44 Mags. They shoot rather well in my revolvers and T/C 10". One thing that has been on my mind with this bullet design for a long time is the beveled base. I believe that it was built into the bullet design for easier alignment when loaded with a progressive press. I could be wrong but that's the way it appears to me. I've kept the velocity down in all the loads that I assemble with this bullet as they are primarily intended for target shooting. Now I plan to try some in a single shot rifle chambered in 44 Mag. The load will start out with a mild mid range charge of Unique at 7.5 grains. Would like to hear Form Members thoughts about this and what bullet they would use in a SS rifle chambered in 44 Mag with a 1 in 20" twist rate. I'm not looking to make a 44 Swift out of this rifle but an accurate cast bullet load that I can plink with and shoot some steel targets with.
Would like suggestions about other cast bullet designs, and weights compatible with this cartridge and twist rate. Thanks, Sendaro

I have never tried the bullets before. I am going to try some soon in my 45-70...The only concern I can really see about them is the possibility of gas cutting around that bevel base..
Maybe this is not an issue as long as the load is kept within reason...That's all I can really offer you...Good luck and just watch for any signs of leading....John

I have had real good results with the RCBS 240gr. GC Sil.bullet with 16gr. 2400 in both my Redhawk and 1894 Marlin.

Screwloosetc, Fired a few rounds this afternoon with the 7.5 grain load and the BB SWC 240 grain bullet. No leading but it didn't do very well. Will be working on loads over the next few weeks or until I find the sweet spot. Thanks for the information to all, Sendaro

Hello, Sendaro.  I don't have any experience with true bevel-base bullets, however, I do have original Ideal moulds which cast a slight bevel..more like a chamfer around bullet base.  I really like this little chamfer..seems to fill out better than a sharp edge & makes inserting in case easier.  I have had custom mould-makers incorporate this in their design.  Just one of the little standard extra's that has been dropped over the years in favor of the bottom line.

22-5-40, Thanks for the in put. Yes the bottom line that's inflected by the Bean Counters is usually the col-pert in screwing good things up. In the case of this little rifle in 44 Mag it may take more time than I expected to get it shooting as accurate as I expect. There are many things that come into play with what load will deliver the best accuracy. Franklin Mann broke it all down to two things Good barrels and good bullets. I believe he was partially correct. Along with good barrels and good bullets The two have to be compatible and the twist rate has to be one that will accommodate the bullets intended velocity. Now all I have to do is find that combination.

I use Oregon Trail 200 grain RNFP bullets in my Win 92, 44-40. They're very hard with just a small bevel, and they're very accurate with 10 grains of Unique.

Food for thought. I was shooting a 300 gr gas check in my 45-70's. 18 gr 2400. Very accurate. Left the GC off. An old friend mentioned trying it. I did. Same bullet, minus GC over same 18gr 2400. Accuracy went from very good to outstanding. WHY!! Any ideas??

Trapdoor Dick,
Yes I do have an idea why. Dr Franklin W. Mann did some experiments that are covered in his book THE BULLETS FLIGHT that could put some light on the problem. It has to do with the bullets base being at an oblique angle to the sides of the bullet. Dr. Mann recovered bullets that were shot into snow or oiled saw dust so that they would not be distorted. Each of the bullets were marked so he could keep track of them when recovered. In his book he gives the results of the experiment, and shows if the base of the bullet is not  square to the cylindrical sides of the bullet a yaw is induced to the bullets flight. That yaw causes the poor accuracy. The die that you are seating the gas checks with my be seating them at an oblique angle. Or of course it could be just bad Ju Ju Bowanna.

I bevel the bases on all of my 32-40 breach seated bullets for serious target work / competition and gas cutting has not been an issue. Bullet alloy with bevel bases has ranged from 1-40 to 1-10 over several years and I started this process about 2005 and have continued to do so since.

J Louis, How do you bevel the bases on your 32-40 bullets? What weight bullet are you shooting?    What design are they?   Sendaro

The bullet is a 32 Cal 212 gr. B&D 6dia. ogive 5groove cylindrical spitzer. Then means for applying the chamfer is a RCBS outside chamfering tool with the dowel cut out of the center. It self centers the bullet and I put about a .010 thous. chamfer on the bullet base. Approx. 3-4 gentle turns is all it takes.

That sounds like a neat way to clean up the heal of a cast bullet. I'll have to give it a try. I have deburring tools without the center dowel that should work. If all goes well tomorrow I will be heading for my shooting house to do some work with my 32-40. I have the SAECO #632 bullet that I can give it a try with. I breach them. Sounds to me at .010" you are just cleaning the edge. It can't hurt to try, so I'll give it a go. Sendaro

back a few years ago Single Shot Exchange  magazine advertised a tool that you used to flatten the base of a cast bullet. Not sure if is still available or not,but it looked pretty simple to make ...I guess it was used to remove the spur.....
