Book value estimates?

OK, this isn't singleshot related, but as a number of us have interests not only in singleshots but in other types of firearms as well, I thought I'd ask this here.

I'm trying to help out a family friend dispose of some of her late husbands firearms-related items and have run across a couple of books in his library that the sellers don't have available or list a value for. The two books are:

The Colt Rifle 1884-1902
by Ted Tivey, copyright 1984, #945 of 1000 printed

and
The Colt-Burgess Magazine Rifle
by Samuel L Maxwell Sr, copyright 1985

If anyone could direct me to a site, or provide an educated guess of approximate values, it would be appreciated.

BP, Go to bookfinder.com  or abebooks.com and type in your books under search and see what the member dealers are asking for copies of the books. Hope this helps.

Tom,

Thanks for the help. The one written by Maxwell was listed, so one down. The book by Tivey drew a blank, but I'll keep digging. Appreciate your reply.

Tom and John,

I tried some sights that were supposed to be linked to multiple book dealers at once, both here and in the U.K., but no joy.

Thanks to you both for your help, and I'll pass the info on to her.

Regards,
BP

I sold a fairly large set of sport specific books few years ago through a dealer.  Problem is most want to pick and chose titles leaving you with the slow sellers. This guy took the whole lot, and paid me much less than 50 % of his catalog selling prices. To his credit he does  have overhead, it's a real business,  and may sit on some of the titles a long time.

Best way to get maximum yield is put them on Ebay.  Which has problems of it's own if you don't do the Ebay yourself.  Few things I have sold through Ebay used somebody else to list and had problems with that too.  One poor listings, spelling errors, overcharged shipping. Other sold a lot of US Military knives for high prices then said she did not have the money to pay me. Ended up with the same 50 cents on the dollar.

One day will go though all the steps and set up ebay my self. Meanwhile 50 cents on the dollar seems to be the best I can do.

Given that the legitimate book dealer has to pay the seller of the books with a check that does not bounce, has overhead expenses and has a right to a reasonable profit, I would be surprised if someone selling a large gun library received 50 cents on the dollar.  The book dealer is stuck with the slow sellers and the demand for used gun books is not great.  35 to 40 cents on the dollar would seem to be a realistic figure.

That hurts.  I tried (& failed) to help a frequent contributor to this forum (now-deceased) sell his large library.  IIRC, there was about 150 feet of bookshelf space with a lot of single shot specific titles.  Big part of the problem was cataloging the collection & describing each book in "book dealer" terms. It is a big job and most folks do not possess the knowledge & ability to do it correctly.  Trying to do it for someone who is dying or for a recent widow, without hurting their feelings or leaving them with the impression that you are just one more vulture is difficult.

The asking price for a Colt-collector specific, limited edition book may be $100+, but the widow will do well if she can turn it into 3 sacks of groceries or a part of a monthly utility bill.

The trade paperbacks, Gun Digests & old spiral bound loading manuals contain gobs of info, but you will only get 50 cents each or less if badly worn.  Today's shoddy bindings are almost as valueless.
