Is there anyone that is making bullet lube pumps? Would like to hear your thoughts on them and suggestions. Any advantages over pan lubing? Sendaro

Are you asking about lubrizers (sizes and lubes the bullet at the same time)? If so, Lyman, RCBS & Magma all make them. I'm pleased with the Lyman 450. The folks I shoot with have the RCBS and Magma and all report similar good results.

I've got a setup from Meacham that is sort of a lube pump with a push through sizer.  Of course you can use a large diameter sizer if you do not wish to affect bullet diameter.  I like the tool as there is no real chance of bullet distortion.  I've only just started using it for my .45's but will soon get sizers in .32 and .38 calibres.

Sendaro,
You might want to do a forum search on the phrase lube pump and you'll see quite a bit of information given.  Willis Gregory was/is(?) making lube pumps.

Willis makes the best lube pump available, it is the Dell Pump and he can be found here under the alias Singleshot. I am not sure if he is still making them or not so shoot him a PM and pose the question. He can also make the various dies you will need for the different bullets you will be using the Lube Pump for. Willis also makes the Dell 59C Lube so you might want to pick some up along with the Pump.

Sendaro the big advantage of the lube pump is you are always shooting freshly lubed bullets and you only lube what you shoot. If you pan lube you will invariably have quite a few lubed bullets left over at the end of the day and depending on the lube some don't have a very long shelf life and the lube could fail at your next outing. The most critical piece of the pump is the die, if it does not fit the bullet the lube will bleed by and create a heck of a mess. So be sure to have the dies made for each of your bullets when you order the pump or you will not be happy with the end results.

I have a Lyman 45 lubber/sizer that I now use. However I'm reading about shooters using a lube pump and starting to understand why they use it. Looks like I have much to learn about this game. Thanks to all of you I have people to ask for help learning about shooting cast bullets in single shot rifles. Thanks again. Sendaro

Sendaro,

I've got one of the lube pumps made by Willis Gregory that J. Louis mentions. Just finished taking mine apart to put some of the 59C lube mentioned.

As John mentions lubing while your shooting is a good idea I just like the idea of being able to sit in my easy chair and lubing bullets while watching TV.

I use Willis's lube pump it's on the Charlie Dell model and I think Charlie's design is based on the Pope pump.  Correct me if I am wrong.

Use a Lyman 45 too

They do different things, Lyman is great for production lubing of straight sided bullets. The Gregory-Dell-Pope hand pump is generally used at the range lubing tapered bullets one at a time.  Well worth adding to your Schuetzen outfit.

To jump in with a little extra info... Charlie Dell started with the general idea of Pope's design for a lube pump and made it bigger.  Where Pope's had a fairly small diameter lube stick and a 1/2" or maybe 5/8" diameter bullet chamber, the lube stick in Charlie's was about twice as big (and longer) allowing for a great supply of lube.  The bullet chamber is also larger, a full 3/4" so it is able to handle a .457" bullet or even bigger.   Cool

The main body of the Pope version was cast brass and had a clamp built in so it could be attached to the loading table for use, while Charlie's was made with a separate aluminum body tube (cast brass head) and has no clamp... it was expected that you would use it hand held.

I have gone both ways, sometimes lubing a day's supply in advance (usually the night before, or so) and sometimes lubing each bullet just before loading.  To be perfectly honest, I don't see much difference in the shooting, and sometimes when I need to get off several shots before conditions change, prelubed bullets help.  Wink

Froggie

BTW  about 20 years ago Joe Ruth made an exact copy of the Pope lube pump.  I own one and have held it and Charlie's side-by-side.  The Pope-type looks almost tiny by comparison, but is cool enough that I plan to dedicate it in a kit with a Arawinko re- and decapper (both are mainly brass) and a dedicated powder to go with my little .25-20 SS low-wall.  Smiley

Thanks for the info Green One. I knew the original idea was Pope's and Charlie modified it and now Willis Gregory makes them...... I assume he still does..... but didn't know what changes, if any, Charlie had made to the original design. All I've ever seen of the Pope lubers was a picture, and never side by side with the Dell version, so hard to tell what things might have been changed. Maybe you could take a picture of the two together to give us a better idea of what they both look like.

Pete Allen makes brass castings for the Pope type lube pump that are big enough for a 3/4" lube die.  Just a raw casting, no parts or plans.  Sorry, I don't have a current phone number for Pete.

The Dell pump that I make is a Schoyen redesign done by Charlie. I got my last batch of head castings from Pete Allen, but his contact info is on computer that died on me. Sad Along with all the pics I had for them.  Angry

Barry Darr also made a version of the same pump in limited numbers as did Jake Simmons.
All work in a similar manner .  The absolutely critical thing is to have a lube die/ or insert that is precisely shaped to fit your specific bullet.  Even a slight variation results in a ugly mess.
