Anyone have any experience with Accurate 5744 in the .45/70?  Looking for a BP equivalent in smokeless... Recommendations or recipes?

I've used 4# of 5744 in 45-70, 32-35, 308, 30BR, 30-30 and others. Never got it to shoot as well as SR4759, IMR4227, A#9, Unique. 5744 seems to change from lot to lot, or something. Many rave reviews, but I couldn't make it work better than the old standards.

I've had excellent results with this powder in my Sharps. I used 25.5 grains with a 405 grain cast (Montana Bullets), Federal Primers, full length size case. Results from .75 inch to 2.0 inch five shot groups at 100 yds. Average group size for five groups of five is 1.94". Very pleasant load to shoot and very accurate.

I bought a can a few years back. It seems it had right on the label 25 grains with a 405 bullet. I looked that up and tried it. I WANT to say  it was "safe for all guns" load but would double check that!
End result, I went to 31 grains of IMR 3031. I couldn't get the 5744 to perform well enough. I was using a Pedersoli roller for most of the shooting. I kepp wanting to try it again because of all the good things written about it.
I hadn't heard about putting a wad over the powder to tighten groups. It sounds like the results without the wad listed above were about the same as I recall getting. I might try that myself.

Question, what is pipe insulation? The black foam type stuff you get at Home Desperate?? It sounds like it helped the load alot!

I could never get 5744 to shoot as good as 4759 in any rifle.   ledball

I tried the 5744 in my 45-70 for awhile and found it to be very dirty with lots of unburned powder left in the bore.  I went back to black.

The black foam pipe insulation is sold for putting on 1/2" or 3/4" copper water pipes.

For cutting .45 wads I use the a 338 Mag case with the bottle neck cut off and the end sharpened. I drill out the primer pocket hole to use an allen wrench to push out the cut wad.

I have been using this foam for years. When it comes out of the barrel it shows no signs of melting. Use of a bore scope indicates it does not result in fouling of the barrel. Instead it actually wipes out some of the fouling in the barrel with each shot.

There is a concern of pushing the wad down too far, compressing it and leaving an air gap between the wad and the bullet. Some believe you can ring a barrel by leaving an air gap between the wad and the bullet. So just push the wad down when you incert the bullet. Do not push the wad down and compress it since this could leave an air gap above the wad.

Picture of my wad cutter is attached.

Interesting idea!  I've used dacron/polyester fiber material but hadn't thought of pipe insulation.  Shocked  I believe I have some just sitting around in my basement, may have to try it...
